I woke up on Thursday with a sore neck. It got worse throughout the day with spasms which were incredibly painful.

Still bad today.

Any recommendations?

I'm on a mix of paracetamol, pharmacy strength ibuprofen, heat patches and tens machine.

(and I've just started drinking which worked really well last night)

...... and I've just ordered a new mattress.

Find yourself a good Osteopath, Modern Acupunturist, Chiro, etc. Get a course of treatment and try and find out whats causing it! if it gets worse get down the quacks! or drink more Ale!

I'm hoping it is the knackered mattress that has caused the problem. I'm on the spare bed tonight.

Never had a problem on this scale before

I wondered about pillows. I've always used 3 feather pillows - but maybe my neck is at too much of and angle? (especially since springs went a few weeks ago).

I've ordered a firm memory foam mattress (4.8 out of 5 from almost 500 reviews) which comes with memory foam pillows.

Mix of ale and ibuprofen is just kicking in now ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I have a memory foam pillow. Apparently your spine is sposed to be straignt when you sleep - i.e your head should not be going up too high or too low.

can u get one of these?

helped a lot in relaxing my back/shoulders - enough to stretch them and make some nice crunching sounds.

Good suggestion with the hot water bottle - did help a bit.

Got a new memory foam mattress and pillows now.

And some diazepam from the docs. (no driving and no more ale for a while)

Still not right, but getting there.

I don't rate memory foam- nothing I can put my finger on, but when my back is bad, the memory foam matress caused more pain than the sprung matress, when my back was not bad, I woke every morning aching

I slept 9 hours yesterday on the new mattress, of course that could be the drugs!

I forget to add that every mattress will be different for everyone, it's also a good thing to change from time to time

Swimming.

Not a trite comment.
It took 2 weeks of daily swimming (not much at first, easy mix of breast & back stroke) for me to give up pain-killers, anti-inflammatories, physiotherapy and the chiropractor when I had similar problems. The specialist at the hospital had told me that "at my age" (then 50) it was just one one those things I would have to get used to.
Not if I could help it!

Sounds a rye neck, I had it back in summer, the spasms were the most painful thing Ive ever experienced, I spent two days face down on the bed!

Do you work at a computer? My Osteo advised that it could be my posture whilst sat at my desk, the hunched forward, arms on the desk can put real strain on the neck and shoulders.

Sploosh, I did my neck slightly two nights ago as I haven't been doing much gym over the last month.

When in the gym yesterday and today all is fine and dandy. Keeping the muscles toned up totally protects you from this horrible thing.
