Coming up to 5 years without cigarettes, after 25 years of smoking. All I can say is that it's really really worth it. Treat yourself to anything, even if it means you put on weight for a while, anything except cigarettes (or cigars). Good luck!

Just don't buy any tomorrow. One more day and you are past the main 'withdrawal' effect. That bit isn't difficult; it isn't that physically addictive.

Not slipping back into it when you try to go back out with your mates, that's hard.

Best of. I keep trying myself.

Gave up nearly 4 years ago after 20 a day for 20+ years

Nicotine cravings last for about a minute. So when you next get in a panic & REALLY want a cigarette you just have to remind yourself that you will feel better in a minute or two. Get up, go for a walk, do something different.

I think a big reason people cave in & start again is that they can't see past a bad Nic craving - they think its never going to end. And it will - quicker than you think.

Change your routines as well & don't "just have one" - it never stops there. If you quit, stay quit.

If you really want to quit you will (or at least you have a good chance). If you are just doing it because you think you should then less likely to succeed in my experience. It wasn't till I reached the point of actually really wanting to do it (as opposed to being told or just thinking that I should) that that I succeeded.

I don't miss it one bit.

Smoked 40 a day for 20yrs. Have given up for one year, and put on three stone due to cadburys creme eggs, and belgian buns.

As for health benefits, I can smell a lit ciggie from 200yrds, and each one smells like freshly bathed Angelina Jolie. I also dream about smoking for some reason.

Go to your GP. 1 month's patches and 1 month's plastic cigarette, £14 total. Dont bother with the cessation councilor. The nicorette breaks the habit, then you give up the nicotine by weaning yourself of patches etc. Good luck.

chrewing gum and mints seem to help no end, tomorrow is going to be tough as i have to drive home from work 3 to 4 hours. but i'm determine to kick it.

one good thing is the amount of money i have in by pocket an extra £36 so far in three days. i could easily smoke 40+ a day!

Funny I'm now on day 4. I tried champix about a year ago and found it worked for a bit but made me very bad tempered (which is totally unlike me.)

Managed to stay off them for about 2 weeks..

Think I have now come to the conclusion having reached 35 that I don't want to die. One of my best friends dads passed away last month at the age of 63 of lung cancer, which really shook me as he had everything else going for him (highly, highly successful businessman and a lovely man)

I haven't used any aids this time, everytime a get a craving I think of my son and how I want to see him grow up and god willing spoil his children rotten for sheer badness!!!

Good luck.

It's been about a month for me although I'll admit I've had the "odd cig" here and there. Maybe 5-6 in total over the last week or so. I'm unable to work or anything at the moment so it's more boredom than anything. I do find I can now take it or leave it though, no cravings for a cigarette first thing in the morning. I don't drink so that won't be an issue.

Hardest thing is resisting the shop 20 steps from my house...

I 'gave up' about 4 years ago for 6 months using Zyban but sadly , during a pretty nasty beer fuelled session picked up a ciggie and started again. Then a couple of years ago, tried Champix and stopped again for about 6 months. After having the shop broken into twice in a fortnight I rthought that just quick fag would be sufficient to help! As all us smokers know, cigarettes dont alleviate stress, they just cause it. I also went on the Alan Carr course 10 years ago in Birmingham...All to no avail.

However, I'm now on my second day without a ciggie! Have smoked since I was 12 so all in all its over 38 years now. I am already feeling slightly better. Just missing out on the three fags in the morning outside with a mug of fresh coffee.

But not missing

£12.00 a day on fags ....£84.00 a week...£4380.00 a year...£4392.00 in a leap year!!!
Stinking
Going to local garage at midnight if I have less than 5 in the packet
Getting up during the night and going downstairs at 4 in the morning for a fag.
Standing outside my local looking incredibly sad.

Hell....Might even join a swanky gym

Good luck to all...Its bloody tough but as others have said, after few days you'll wonder what all the fuss was about!

Alan Carr. Read it 4 times to completely destroy all the myths I was using to keep smoking.

I still get the odd dream where I have started smoking again and the shame is terrible. Such a releif when I wake up.

Best return/effort decision I've ever made.

How are you getting on? I'm finding it more difficult on days off. At work its easier because theres always something to do but Sundays!!!! Difficult!

The other problem is that mentally you break that barrier as soon as you light one up! Keep at it. Tough as hell...

yes

Its like after stopping for a week its as if you have something to lose if you smoke even 1 cig , but after that 1 is smoked you feel as if it will not hurt frown
