Is it possible without taking steroids?

I have taken a break from the gym recently but when I was really into it my heaviest press was 2 reps on 100kg and I weighed about 73.5kg back then.
I have never tried training for just 1 maximum press and would be intested to hear if anyone has managed to press twice their bodyweight?

Google Gene Rychlak, Ryan Kennelly or Scot Mendelson. I believe these guys are regularly tested.

I some american weight lifting tables for athletes which gives standards for all the main lifts, the range is from - untrained, novice, intermediate, advanced, elite.

For someone weighing 73.5kg the elite level is 319lbs or 145kg...so its pretty close to double bodyweight. So yes it is probably possible but not for your regular gym-goer without a lot of work.

Also some of the big guys wear bench shirts which give you a slight advantage, and they have perfect bodies for it with massive chests and stumpy arms, I've seen some of the footage on youtube and they only look like their moving the bar up and down a couple of inches!!

yeh, the heavy lifters have almost no range.

Where as if you have long arms like me then it makes the movement very tough.

My mates dad pressed 300 pound when he was fifty years old.
He weighed under 11 stone at the time.
He wasn't/isn't a muscle man but always did a bit of training.

Should be do-able with hard training for most people, no steroids required.

I know lots of people that can do twice their bodyweight. I can get 2-3 reps at 210 and i weigh about 95kg, but i've been training consistantly for many years. I've never taken any sort of drug ever, training regularly and hard is the key.

Not sure if i understand the question, but I do 5 days out of 7-10 & around an hour per set, individual days per bodypart. I still miss days with work and so my week is not a calandar one its just when i get time. I also often take a few weeks off every 4-6 months. Luckily i have a very good gym at home with everything i need, so it makes it easier to make time, but its a lot more boring like that.

I think my original post may have been slightly misleading, it is definately achievable, but everyone i know that is capable of doing drug free has been training for a couple of years at least or is a pro athlete. For me the gym is just a hobby i use to relax, i try to not take it too seriously otherwise i get obsessive which is definately not healthy.

210kgs is a Big lift for some 95kg body weight- I'm impressed! If that was unequipped it must be close to a European record!

It is a record....hmmm.

Not to be insulting but do your weights read in lbs...not kg

Its just that from my standards the elite level for the highest bodyweight class i.e 320lbs+ or 145kg or nearly 23 stone is 425lbs or 193kg.

Or to put in another way you are pushing 35kg more than an elite athlete i.e world level...

So for you to be pressing 210kg or 2.2x bodyweight is astonishing hence my tongue in cheek trenbolone post earlier wink

ETA, if anyone is interested these are the tables I use

I thought it likely that they'd be in Lbs but, as he referenced his body weight in Kgs, I had to ask. Powerlifrting world records are round about that (and only for 1 rep....)

Yes it wasn't clear. Sorry. I mean if you can rep for 210kg what do you use for sets when training?

Out of interests what lifts are you at the elite level for? I have found them a pretty good indicator.

They are aimed at 'strength' athletes, not actual weight lifting competitors, though I thought the elite levels were very very high actually, for someone my bodyweight i.e 72kg I would have to benchpress 145kg which is unfathomable to me without putting weight on...

I think the charts are a pretty good indicator. I'd also like to know what you're elite in? (I'm prety close with a few- but still a fair way to go..)

Also- the guy doesn't bench 210kg for reps, he's mistaken....probably

210 is in kg, you can choose to believe it as you see fit.

I have done strength competitions in the past, including the Englands strongest man qualifiers when i was 21. Several guys i trained with back then have won the competition over the years.
I don't go to the gym to be the strongest, i doubt i ever would be even if we were not including those who use "assistance", there are some seriously strong guys out there, i go because i enjoy it.

Someone that could strict curl their own bodyweight would be far more impressive in my opinion, there's one to try.

I can believe you've done 210kgs- but had to ask as it's a small number of folk who can do that! That's up with the top guys in powerlifting at 90 kg- very impressive.

Also, by 'assistance' I meant bench shirt, not steroids.

Cheers

No worries, shame your so far away or i could of given you a tour of my kit, it's custom built by unique using thicker steel to take the extra weight. Boring to most people but quite cool to gym bunnies.
