Right i'm looking for a proper safety razor

Right i'm sick of my mach 3 shaver, and other wet shaver blades costing the earth. So thinking of going old school with a shaver that used a razor blade. this type



anyone use one? any good and does anyone know who may sell them in a shop. been looking at John Lewis and Debs but no lucl

I've got a merkur vision 2000 and it works really well when I take my time with it, but if I do it quickly I end up cut to ribbons

I switched to a Merkur Futur a few months ago. Does a good job once I "retrained" myself how to shave. Basically I found that if I used it the same way I used my Mach 3 or Sensor etc (long strokes with lots of pressure) I would get nicks. Shorter, lighter strokes do the trick.

Also I discovered that "wet shave" should be just that. I get better results, less irritation etc if my face is properly wet and soapy/foamy. I mean properly dripping so much so that it was too much mess stood over the sink so I shave in the shower now.

Can't remember where I got the razor online, Timothy something?, but they are all about the same price. I got a blade sampler pack from Connaught though, 35 blades for £8 and I still have about half left. Boots or similar carry Wilkinson Sword stuff, which I gather isn't the best, but cheap enough if you want to give it a go.

Ive got a Gillette one, as mentioned, you need to teach yourself how to shave properly.

When you learn though, it gives fantastic results, a much much closer shave, and it doesnt actually take much longer than using a multiblade setup. I deffinately wont be going back.

I havent seen them for sale in a real shop, but I spose London is bound to have some shops if you live nearby. This online retailer is in Reading IIRC so you may be able to visit them if local.

The Merku HD is slightly smaller to hold than a Mach 3.

I understand the Futur is a fair bit larger.

I also find shaving cream in a tub to be better than soap in a tub.

I thought the same a few years back and bought a Merkur.
Used a few times, ripped my face to pieces each time so gave up.
Obviously I'm not using properly.

I use a merkur.

Will last longer than me, blades cost peanuts, and it looks very manly in the bathroom.

Try a pack of the cheapest 'value' twin bladed supermarket razors and then ask yourself whether the premium branded ones are worth the money. I pay 25p for 10. They work fine.

You are probably right, but I find that the lack of weight in a disposable is an issue. I like something heavy, and a Merkur fits the bill. That said, I can't get away with a safety razor with a comb on the front like the one pictured above. Don't know why it should make any difference.

Soap wise, I use Ingram (the ordinary blue/white one), which works for me.

Mach 3s are MILES better than cheap disposables from the shops.

Safety razrors are better than Mach 3s. They will also cost les in the long run.

The cheapo razors are sharp, easy to use and I end up with a smooth chin. What could be miles better than that?

If the 'closer than ever before' puff was true, by now you would shave one side of your face and the whiskers would fall out of the other!

with the disposables - i.e bics, i have to keep going over and over.

also the fact that they dont (the head) move around at all makes them unweildly. certainly not as good as a mach 3 IMO.

Bic razors are admittedly pretty shabby, but the ones I use are even cheaper! Granted they don't have swivelly heads, but I'm not convinced they're such a good thing anyway - I wouldn't buy a pen with a floppy nib.

Your pen analogy is frankly and embarassing one.

End of the day we could all get by with the cheapest st that would do the job in every walk of ilfe, but its nice to use something with a bit of qaulity every now and again

the head of the blade curving with the face is an advantage, i daresay a wobbly pen is not.

anyway, for those that want a close shave get a safety razor, theyare particularly good for shaving across or against the grain for a finer shave. which is risky with a mach 3.

i might move onto a straight razor next (which is effectivley like a big knife!)

After getting fed up at the steady increase in the price of blades for the 'vibrating' Mach3 razor I tried one of these:-

Another vote for the Merkur from me. After seeing this thread, I suggested one for Christmas & although my wife baulked at paying £70+ she got me the Merkur 23C and I'm delighted with it.

Really great shave & no more Mach-rippoff blades.

Mach 3 blades arent a rip off - they just do the job in a different way. I'm getting a saftey razor but will always keep some Mach 3's about. I can take a Mach 3, run it under a cold tap and shave "dry" to 90% perfect in under 2 mins. If i did that with a saftey razor i'd be in hospital....i can spend an hour with an electric and not do 50% of what i want.

I'm sure a saftey, with soap and hot water and time, will be 99% - but theres a cost to that 9% in time and hassle thats as much a "rip off" (if you dont value it) as a mach 3 is.

right i've used Mach 3, and others and been using the king of shaves blade which is OK.

always use King of shaves gel but bought this lot a few days ago and arrived today, just tried it out and WOW

My thoughts: at £8.95 for 40 blads or the same price as 2 Mach 2 blades that would last me about 2 weeks max. I know have a bloody good shaver and enought blades for year or more. I thought I would see what it was like and how sharp and just put the blade in and did a quick dry shave (which normally hurts me) result smooth and no irritation.
