Hi Guys

Over the past few years I have enjoyed several cans of diet coke a day (about 10), and yesterday I succumbed to constant nagging from friends and family to cut down - I have stopped completely and am now drinking loads of water.

Everything is going well so far. I felt really tired last night (probably due to lack to caffeine), but had a great deep sleep with some amazingly vivid dreams). I also have a bit of a headache.

Has anyone else kicked the evil soft drink?

Tell your friends and family to mind their own business?!

No, and I don't plan to. I like it. fk 'em, drink what you want.

Better than cocaine, cigarettes and alcohol and a damn sight cheaper.

ETA: It also seems like you're making the rookie mistake of giving up things. You've gone from 10 (wow btw... that's a lot, most I've drunk is 6 (or one 2l bottle, but that's pushing it!) to nothing.

Why don't you just drink 5 a day for a month? 3 for the next month? then the odd one when you really crave it?

But yeah, even as an avid coke drinker myself, I have to agree with your mates... 10 is a lot.

Your teeth will thank you. Check around the outside surfaces next to the gum. Do they look a bit chalky or even a brownish colour?

See this was an argument people have used on me, but since there's no sugar in Diet Coke it's not so bad. You have to worry about the acid but keep your teeth clean and there's no real problem.

I'm not saying it's not bad for you, but then everything is these days, and there are a lot of worse things.

I'll add this too:

now 400 strong (half way up again in front) and since i'm moving at the weekend, i'm wondering what the hell i'm going to do with it...

Final thing: I've done quite a lot of research on the ingredients because I was worried about it at one time, having found pretty much sod all except some random crazy people in america saying it melted their toes when they were abducted by aliens.

Most of the stuff in it is 1/10000th of what is deemed to be "safe levels"

10 is more than several........your teeth will dissolve and wear away quicker than the yorkshire coastline.
keep it up and save for dentures!

I was at the dentist recenty and my teeth got a clean bill of health. I want to stop before I wreck them, though.

Headache has now gone and feeling all is well with the world smile

I regard diet coke lovers as some sort of alternate species. Regular coke is delicious but diet coke is a little bit

I go through phases when I give up Diet Coike, and I find the best thing is to have the odd sip, especially in the morning, to keep headaches at bay.

I don't drink (headaches) or smoke so I need some pleasure..... Also a celiac so food is a pain at times

Not that I am complaining.

I think it's the aspartame that worries people. Like you say, no evidence of harm but worryingly Donald Rumsfeld's company invented it (according to my slightly paranoid friend)

Again, biggest problem OP is going to have is giving it up cold turkey. Why go from 10 to 0 in one day? There is a middle ground you know... balanced diet and all that.

If you like diet coke, you don't have to drink 3 litres of it a day?

The acid will definitely damage your teeth. It will soften the enamel and then when you brush you will strip away a tiny layer. With time you will get serious erosion problems.

I have also heard talk of studies which have demonstrated that bacteria were able to metabolise the artificil sugar in diet drinks and produce acid.

I know, but I like challenges and there is a sense of achievement going cold turkey (I know, I'm weird!).

If you drink 10 cans a day, yes (cans are also worse because they're always fresh, and so fizzier... more eroding effect)

However, I've been drinking it a long time and have no problems with my teeth. I've asked my dentist repeatedly about it and he maintains it's fine and isn't doing any damage.

Fair enough, I just don't think you need to give it up. Send any spare cans you've got to me though, if you need some help.

The headache is down to the sudden lack of it. I would cut down gradually to zero over time.
