Wifey got me a Philips shaver for xmas (no idea why but thought it would be rude not to try it!)

Now i can normally shave with a mach3 in about 2mins start to finish. In fact, if i'm in a hurry i can just splash on some water, shave, dry, dab of Loreal skin care an i'm done in 60 secs!

Now this electric thing seems crap! It's not uncomfortable but just doesnt seem to work, i've used it a few times now and have to mach3 it after each time. Is this a "getting used to it" thing or a preparation thing? Will an electric preshave product help? or is it just £100 of cack?

Was thinking of trying a proper safety razor but though i should exhaust the options with this battery powered nonsense first!

Never seemed to work when i tried them either. Think it's generic. Although they're still for sale after however many years so there must be some that are alright. I'd just stick with it at first and see if it imporves

I think they work if you use them everyday but as I'm a lazy SOB and tend to shave once a week, when I'm starting to look like Grizzly Adams, it has to be a long wet shave.

Nope, it's £100 of cack I'm afraid.

I had one for Xmas from my parents a few years ago. Went straight on eBay.

is the Philips a rotary one?

I've electric shaved for many years and was given a rotary a few years ago and couldn't get decent results with it.

Rotory? It has the 3 "wheels" that spin....not the long foil type.

I'm amazed you can pay £300 for these things and they are as bad as this! If your stubble doesnt point straight out like desperate dan they just seem very poor.

The guidance always says it'll take time to adapt but I've never found one that'll give a proper shave, even after weeks of persevering. I always felt unclean after using them too. Then there's the faff with cleaning the darn things. They're just pants.
Wet shaving is the only way.

A wet shave with a safety razor /should/ take a bit longer than 5 minutes but I have adapted mine and can do it in about 5 minutes - better than a Mach 3 but definitley not quicker.

Cannot ever imagine a machine being as good as a wet shave.

Well I'm going to go 'against the grain' (sorry) and say that i am happy with the electric shaver I got for Xmas.

Braun 3 series, use it most days, replaced my fusion razor.

What I realised is that you have to push down hard on the skin for it to cut, compared to stroking the face with the fusion.

After a few goes I've got it nailed and although it takes slightly longer, it is as good as a wet shave.

Tiggsy - sounds like you have the same shaver as me - Phillips thingy with the Nivea cream in it?

It does seem to take longer than wet shaving to get good results, but I think it gives a closer shave? It did take a few times for me to get used to it (and my skin, thought I was going to rip my face off the first time!)

I've used a Philishave for many years now, and according to the timer on my current one, it takes 3 minutes...

I'm one of the apparent few who get good results with an electric shaver - sometimes, if I'm in a real hurry I'll drag the Gillette fusion over my face, but I never get as close a shave as I do with the electric.

FWIW, I swear by King of Shaves stuff - the oil makes a superb pre-electric shave lotion, much better than the Nivea cream and a fraction of the price when it comes to refill time too wink
