I'm looking to find something healthy to snack on whilst at my desk throughout the day.

I have been suggested nuts, but I've never really liked them, and I believe they are quite high in fat.

I'm looking to get something relatively cheap, but still snacky. To replace crisps.

I've found trying to stay in shape over the winter, very hard, especially as work increases, and getting to the gym is difficult. Plu I've got the natural craving to eat more over the winter.

Any suggesttions?

I eat Biltong. This is spiced dried meat. It's a bit like beef jerky except that you can get springbock & ostrich and other game versions. Ostrich is the healthiest but crocodile is my favourite.

Morrisons sell both Biltong and beef jerky.

Only trouble is that its £1 for a 25g bag of biltong and £1.99 for a 50g bag of jerky, gets quite expensive snaking on that.

It can be bought on the net and ebay for a bit cheaper though.

Plenty of places sell it on line. There are a couple of SA expat butchers who make and sell it in London. Otherwise try http://www.biltongexpress.co.uk/onlineshop.htm

Thought about a mixture of dried apricots, brazil nuts, almonds and walnuts? Also pop in a few pumpkin and sunflower seeds. You're right in that they're quite high in fat but (relatively) good fats - just don't eat too many.

Plain pop corn, dried apple slices, dried apricots, raw veg sticks.
Very yummy, and so chewy that they last a while.

Tescos flavoured rice cakes are nice too...chilli lick

One danger of healthy snacks is the amount of sugar and salt they put in them to make them taste nice. nuts

You can also get excellent organic buffalo biltong from ex-F1 champion Jody Scheckter at http://www.laverstokepark.co.uk/organic-biltong. Having made a fortune racing cars and seling weapons training systems in the USA, he now owns a large chunk of Hampshire that he has turned into an organic farm. Makes his own buffalo mozzarella too lick

All this talk of Biltong... is it actually healthy for you??

If so, why not just by a pack of ham and be done with it.

Snacks are one of the hardest things to make healthy. Almost everything is high in something, with the exception of popcorn, which has the nutritional value of carpet.

I'd consider a small wedge of a soft cheese like Brie, a slice of ham, and some grapes...
