After playing tennis this morning, my big toe started to hurt, probably because my shoes are too small. When I got home I took my sock off and found a smallish, what looks like a bruise. It's a light pink colour, and is only in the corner of my toe.

It hurts slighty when I apply pressure to it - walking etc. and I can feel it 'throbbing' every so often.

It's not hurting as much as before, but it's still there.

I've googled and people have said put it can take 6 months to heal and to put it in hot water everyday for 20 minutes.

People have also lost their toenail too :/

Is it as serious as the interwebs makes it out to be?

If it is just a bruise it will grow out. It will probably go black too as it is simply dried blood trapped under the nail. In extreme cases it is possible to drill though the nail plate to relieve the pressure but i doubt this would be of any benefit to you.
The average tow nail can take between 6-12 months to grow from the lunula(half moon looking bit) to the free edge.
Just keep the nail short to avoid catching it and let nature take its course.

How big is it? Most climbers have "climber's toenails" where the nail peels away from the toe because the shoes are so tight and the toes have body weight pressing down on them. It can go black in the corners (from dried blood). It will heal after a few months. Just don't keep doing it.

I walked part of the Cornish coastal path a few years back - proper hiking job carrying tent and all the gear.

My boots were a bit too new and I hadn't broken them in properly.

I ended up with a blue / black big toe nail. It "peeled off" a couple of weeks later - bit like "The Fly" vomit

Grew back - but took a long time.

Thanks everyone.

Woke up this morning and there's no pain at all. The throbbing's gone and it feels fine, but there's still that pink patch. I'm starting to get a bit worried now though, but as Lemmonie said, i'm just going to let nature take it's course.

Yep, I had this after playing 5-a-side a few years ago. The nails on both my big toes fell off but grew back with no problem.

Ouch. What did you cover them with whilst they were growing back?

Socks smile

They weren't sore at all, I assumed the nail beds would be tender and sore but they were fine smile

Right, it's been about 5 months now and no difference. It's still the same colour, shape and position. Is this normal? It feels quite weaker compared to my other big toenail, and is a little more sensitive. Still no pain though. Is this also normal?

Will it eventually grow out? As I said, is the same position and hasn't moved in 5 months? Or will it just fall off?

for the simple reason that without seeing the actual problem, it is sometimes very difficult to make a diagnosis.

As one professor said, the problem is that patient's don't read the medical textbooks - therefore their descriptions of their problem my completely misleading. What may look like a bruise to you may be skin cancer and vice versa yikes

So you've got a small pink patch under one of your nails and it doesn't hurt?

Stop being a big poofta and get on with it man!

That is my professional opinion anyway.

Cheers

I'm a bit worried now. Part of the nail has started to 'break' and is slightly 'lifting'. It's about 1/3 the way down, right on the edge, about 4mm across.

I'm gonna have a search for my camera tomorrow so you can see it.

I'm finding it hard to cut it aswell, it's getting quite long now. It feels delicate, and that if I try to cut it, I'm afraid it might fall off.

Is it worth getting removed? Is there no simple 5 minute operation to get it off and just let another grow back?

Go see a Podiatrist.

Or have a nice hot bath and yank the fker off.

Then set about your nail.

hehe

Sounds like you need to see a GP or podiatrist... and pretty soon.
