Anybody else suffer from this?

I get it about once a month or so, this last bout started with food posioning on new years eve and has come back with a vengence. Im normally 38inches round the belly (admitally slightly overweight but very 'hippy' too), today i measured myself at 51 inches frown

No idea what sets it off but its not wheat, gluten or milk and i eat only a limited number of things and rarely change, but still get it every so often.

Anybody suffer from it and/or have some advice?

I've posted about it before - its generally a term given when the docs dont actually know what is wrong, but obviously know it isnt anything really nasty.

I suffered for years, was put off by the docs several times, then by chance ran into a specialist in London who sorted me right out. Blind luck, meeting him but he helped me no end. It turned out I had a yeast intolerance which had built up over years and is something the docs (nhs and private) never tested for - a few months on a restricted diet, some pills and I'm many, many times better. I'd suffered for about 15 years and never thought I'd sort it.

Drop me a pm and I'll pass on some details.

Might be a bad reaction to something. My sister had the symptoms of IBS then found out she'd become milk intolerant. Cut that out and no probs.

I think he is referring to the bloatedness he is feeling.

Your stomach can pop out looking like youre pregnant.

You might find the sermon I wrote whilst feeling particularly self righteous last summer useful.

IBS can be caused by stress (it definitely is a trigger for me).

Other causes/triggers I've found are aspartame, metformin, dairy, wheat, most other grains(!), fruit ( fructose malabsorption). Of course YMMV.

Last week I was put on Mebeverine as the doctor said I seem to have the symptoms. He said he was putting me on them as it would stop the grumbling and said it was probably temporary?

Bloating, uncomfortable tum, cramps, feeling full when Iv eaten nothing is a new one today. all the doctor did was feel about on my tum.

Im finding it quite frightening and Im abit lost as to what to do now

I know stress is a main factor in mine as when I worry about it it flares up.

I just keep thinking is this it now? no more eating whatever and not worrying about anything other than getting fat?? now all I think is whether I can eat that? will it make me ill?? Im only 23 frown
thing is I shouldnt have eaten that bl00dy chilli sauce and it wouldnt have started in the first place grrrrrrr

sorry for high jacking someone elses thread lol

I have suffered from IBS for about 2 years.

I was told to eat healthier, exercise more and be wary of wheat, dairy and high fat products. Consequently I try to exercise every day and only eat home cooked fresh produce.

But my IBS hasn't gone away - which leads me to believe that there are definate stress factors or food intolerances involved. If I avoid wheat, dairy altogether and make sure I exercise every day it's not as bad as it has been. But 3-4 times a week I still go from a slim size 10 to looking 6 months pregnant and in real agony.

I've read everything I can, tried cutting out different food groups, taken meberverene (sp?), herbal tablets, peppermint, fibre suppliments, soluble gel drinks etc etc.

Exercise is probably the biggest help, if I don't exercise the episodes are much worse, more common and more painful. Similarily if I eat anything processed or fatty the effect is immediate.

The results are I'm slimmer, healthier, fitter and a great cook. But I'm still in pain regularily. So if anyone has any tips - I'd be delighted to know them!

meberverine didnt work for me and ive had the symptoms since late puberty. I find anything 'rich' sets me off and also certain brands. I can eat almost any tesco sarnie i like, but nothing from esso or M&S.

When i have it really bad i tend not to be able to go to loo for days, yet im starving, as if my digestive system has stopped and im not absorbing anything. They used to say that it was a lack of roughage and fibre, so eat lots of all-bran cereals. Conversely this doesnt work for me and have recently read an article heralding new advice not to eat any fibre if you do suffer from this constipation since youre tummy doesnt need any more hard work to do shifting it.

I find Prune activia yoghurts help since they help to get everything moving again lol

AS for what food to eat, try to create a mental or written food diary. I cant eat snickers for example yet i can eat tonnes of wispa's. You get used to it frown

thanks for your reply, I'll definatly start that food diary!!

thing is, Iv never had the symptoms last this long before. If i ate sweetcorn it would cause cramps and then it would stop once it'd had been "passed" out of my system (without trying to be crude) I avoided it for about 8 months before I had this reaction to chilli dip nearly 2 weeks ago and im still paying for it...

is it always like this? months without anything then bang! i dont know what else is causeing me to feel ill at the min as iv never had a problem with anything else.

sorry for all the questions but I dont have anyone to ask who has experiance of it

It's different for everyone pumalucy. It more or less never goes away for me, whereas for others it's an immediate reaction to something they eat.

They say it's related to your state of mind/current life situation. Or to food intolerances. FI can develop at any point in life, even something you have previously eaten every week with no problems. Chilli is a common one, along with fats and oils, dairy, wheat, alcohol, caffeine, red meat, and anything cooked using the above ingredients. It can be very limiting to stick to this kind of diet, and you'll lose a lot of weight, but if it works for you then you've no choice!

I used to suffer from it. I did a lot of research into possible cures. In the end I ended up having colonic irrigation (not as big deal as it sounds) and changed my diet to include about twice the RDA of fibre. This has completely cured it and have not had any probs for about 18 months.

You are on the right track. Tackle all of the above and I think you will be surprised at the results.

Good luck.
