Hi all

Just wanted to get a general consenus in regards to the swine flu vaccination for my mother. She has recently overcome breast cancer at the age of 50 so I am a little bit apprehensive of her getting the vaccination, especially since there have been many reports of side effects.

Now she has had the normal flu vaccination about a month ago and she is on regular medication for post cancer treatment, Armidex, which have side effects of their own including arthritis in her hands. She came out of the flu season unscathed and swine flu has really not been the pandepemic that was predicted.

Can anyone please give any input, I'm so worried about any adverse affects that she may suffer.

Swine flu, despite the huge media hype, is no worse than any other strain of flu. Likewise, the swine flu jab is no better or worse than the seasonal flu jab which she's already had.

Personally, I've had neither, as I know from experience that the side effects (which, suprisingly, are flu-like symptoms) of the jab are almost certain. I've never had flu yet, so I'll take my chances.

If she's immunocompromised in any way, then she should have the vaccination. The fact she's alreay had the seasonal flu jab suggests she should probably have the swine flu jab too.

It ill just make her feel like crap for a few days thumbup

Cheers parapaul, she's not had the swine flu vaccination as she has been called in for it tomorrow - I had told her not to have it, hence why I'm trying to gain others opininons in the mean time.

Was involved in trying to immunise the majority of our workplace - the majority of side effects were a very sore arm and rednes around the injection site. A small proportion of people did suffer flu like symptoms and for some reason this tended to be more prevalent in the males!

This flu jab, is predominately the same as the seasonal flu jab in the core ingredients and should be as safe as the normal jab. I have advised both my parents and my sister (was 8 months pregnant at the time) to have it.

I had seasonal 'flu jab in October, swine 'flu jab Mid December. No side effects to either. Nothing. The risks of getting 'flu FAR outweigh the risks of the jab if you are in a vunerable group.

I sound to be more or less the same as your mother - 51, in final stages of treatment for breast cancer (having radiotherapy right now), and on Arimidex. I had the jag, and got a very sore arm, but no other side effects, and speaking personally I'm glad I had it as there's still some swine flu around - my cleaning lady's grandson went down with it over Christmas - my immune system is very suspect as I know from being downed by the winter vomiting virus, and it gives me a slightly greater feeling of confidence going out and about. HTH.

My son has had 2 lots of the swine flu Jab plus normal due to cancer and my husband and I have had one jab plus normal flu jab. Yeap it did hurt and my son's both times (month inbetween) has come up very swollen several inches ether side and above but oncology consultant said yep that is fine it happens all over! It took ages to go down and it is still red now. I would rather he had it than not as the flu could send him to ITU again and kill him! He has relapsed cancer and had VRE and Menangitis! So Please go and make sure your mother has it please!
