Ok I know really this should be in the health matters but realsed what is the point one no bugger looks there anyway!
Son has relapsed testicular luekiamia and has a double lumen central line. (line goes into vein by the heart) He woke up this morning at 4.20am with an itchy line area. I had to change the dressing 30 mins ago and found it red and squeezed out a lot of pus. His last count was 0.75 netraphils and have put him on half dose of chemo. I get asked everytime I go to hospital is the site clean. His tempurature is not up and he is feeling well if netraphils were down he would not produce pus. I think I should ring hospital and just check but realise we will have to go to a&e wait 6 hours for an oncology doctor to arrive and then take cultures and either send us home or keep us in for weeks(but know if he becomes ill or temp goes to 38 we will have a lengthly stay in hospital anyway) (we have spent plenty of time in before and it is hell so just trying to advoid it) but husband says as we squeezed out pus, infection in site will get better and ringing hospital is not neseccary. What should I do?? You lot seem to know every thing so do I ignore said husband or go with insinct???

For gods sake, do not under any circumstances mess about with your childs health, get straight to the hospital, if its nowt at least you will know, if its something then its better seen to quickly. Having had my father suffer stomach cancer recently, every time he feels really ill now, mother gets straight on phone to specialist nurse who advises her whats the best course of action.

With respect, I wonder whether this is the right place to ask! I would get on the phone. Surely in the situation you are in you have direct access to a specialist?

Hospital!

In my unqualified opinion, if he has pus there it could lead to a bigger infection ?septicemia because his immune system isn't capable of dealing with it.

Better to regret sitting about for 6 hours down there than regret not going at all!

Best of luck smile

As others have said, I would contact his specialist nurse/ ward. If they do want to see you then you shouldn't need to endure the wait in A&E as you will already be referred to the speciality you need.

I certainly wouldn't leave this without any medical advice, he has an infection and it needs treating sooner rather than later

Go to the hospital, it's better hanging around for nothing than saving time and missing something.
Not meant as a scare, but I now someone who aged 16 was diagnosed with leukemia on a friday afternoon and was gone by Monday.

It isn't worth not checking.

You know I knew it would be sent to another forum even though no person views this thread in a month of Sundays so what is the damn point in a health forum anyway only to make the ill iller! Thank you for all of you whom helped gave my silly hubby a kick up the arse! Phoned hospital luckily becuase I was on the ball and have checked him reguarly and squeezed out the pus it means we only have to go to hospital tomorrow at 10am for check and ORAL anti- biotics. IF I had left it he could have become very ill indeed. His netraphils are coming up so that means he can get over it quicker. I have had many an argument with said hubby with hosptial and I have been right all the time. You know what this time you lot changed his mind and he could not argue with you lot could he!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! T-D you are in st if you are there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Said hubby in dog house if you can find one big enough for a 6'6'' pain in the arse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You might find that the health forum was intended for stuff like ingrowing toenails and so forth. Not "my son who is on chemo has pus oozing out of his chest" type queries.

Lots of folk browse the Health Forum. A quick Search would show lots of knowledgeable and in depth discussion on a variety of topics. Fair enough, you might not get an off-the-cuff instant response within 30 secs of posting but, given the nature of the question and the obvious answers I would have thought that the best Forum would be the "state the bleedin obvious Forum"

Hope everything goes well.

What surprises me is not that this was moved to the health forum which plenty do read, especially those with medical skills, but that the question was asked at all.
