Just because the state has yet to add something to the controlled substances list doesn't mean to say that it is safe. Of course, just because something is on that list doesn't make it inherently unsafe either.

With regard to the Mephedrone, in over 15 years of involvement with clubs & clubbers the only time I've known anyone get seriously endangered has been by the plant food. Personally I'd stay well clear.

To quote the recently departed chair of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs:

Prof David Nutt said:
I know it's controversial to say it, but people are better off taking ecstasy or amphetamines than those we know nothing about," he says. "Who knows what's in [mephedrone] when you buy it? We don't have a testing system. It could be very dangerous, we just don't know. These chemicals have never been put into animals, let alone humans.

You could always email David Nutt if you have a specific question. He's the kind of guy who will answer you if he has the time, or will know who the experts are on this drug. His PA's email address is m.collett@imperial.ac.uk and her name is Mrs Margaret A Collett. Info from here:

What I've heard about it from friends with a liberal attitude to drugs has been mainly negative.

Ditto.

My younger brother is at Uni and one of his housemates is into mephedrone. Sounds fecking awful from his descriptions.

My housemate tried it recently. Ended up smelling of shrimp for ages, and all sweaty at the time. Couldn't see the appeal myself.

First started hearing about it from all the proper clubbers (ones involved in the dance music industry) about a year and a half ago. They were going mad about it as it was so cheap and gave a better high than coke. About 3 months after that, most of them were just calling it plant feed and I know a few people who are properly addicted to it and wish they had never laid eyes on it. People started to almost become disgusted with it, those who weren't addicted.

Now it's moved into general public clubbing territory I keep hearing about it all the time, usually by people who think they are taking "meth" shoot

Used it quite a few times. Usually when clubbing.

Advantages:
  • Cheap.
  • Fun up to a point.
  • Wont get you arrested unless you're being a plank.
Disadvantages:
  • Very easy to do too much. Seems like a short term addiction. Once you're on it, you want more. You will do the amount you take with you.
  • Seemingly addictive after its worn off too. Although I've not experienced this.
  • Very obvious when on it. Pupils, sweat, pale look.
  • Research chemical, and as such there's no data on the side effects of long term use.

Gone off the whole scene tbh. Especially as it turns me into a plonker roughly half the time.
Also, one of my friends is quite addicted which is a shame.
