I had an appointment with the dentist today, followed by a visit to the hygienist. I've been once before some years ago and can still remember the sledge like touch she had, but thought i would give it another go.

So she peers in my mouth and states all looks fine, but we'll just give them the once over. She then proceeds to inflict the kind of pain that after a couple of minutes has me breaking my own fingers in angst anticipation of what feels like her peeling my gums away from my teeth and shoving rusty nails down the gaps!

Needless to say i won't ever be going back, but am i alone in this stand? biggrin

I used to have a hygenist who didn't have the most gentle touch however she did have a big pair of breasts that used to rub against me while she was inflicting pain.
That made things a lot more bearable.

It's supposed to hurt. I mean come on, you've got to let them have a little bit of fun.

What he said. It's only a bit of polishing and scrapping. It shouldn't be causing actual pain!

'Deeply unpleasant' was the phrase I used to describe my hygenist's last treatment. She smiled at me as if that was a compliment.

wind up as I work in the trade but dont have hygenist as most are indeed brutal.....
BTW if nothing amiss you are wasting your money and dont need the treatment...possibly.

Indeed, MacGee doesn't your accountant have heart failure at the thought of you doing your own gum gardening?

dhead, I hope that was tongue in cheek.

Yes sometimes hygienist treatment is unpleasant, dependant on alot of things, state of gums, tooth sensitivity, pain threshold etc etc etc. We can give local anaesthetic if you're being a total wuss wink

Try another hygienist, I think you should all come and see me smile

ETA: I don't enjoy inflicing pain, and I actually feel quite guilty if someone is in a bit of discomfort.

My wife sees the dentist for her scrape and polish, and has anaesthetic, as the hygienist doesn't seem to understand the screeched words "those teeth there are hellish sensitive, don't point your pressure washer at them ever again!!"

was indeed tongue in cheek...of course. I forgot but I do have a hygenist in one of my practices. he is newly qualified and is excellent. Most people should visit the hygenist and get it sorted. Gums are the foundation of the mouth ...so look after them..

I do agree with MacGee, hygienists are very important. Plaque left on the tooth surfaces can do a few things, 1) cause tooth decay and the second where the salvary glands are calcifies the plaque which can cause gum disease. Getting rid of the calculus can make your teeth and gums very healthy. Make sure you brush the gums as well but becareful not to brush hard which can cause the gums to recede which can cause the pain whilst with the hygenist. But hey bet you have a great smile now.
