Through a case of Google Maps, and my ledgendary sense of direction, I ended up running arou 9 miles on Sunday. I've never run that distance before (did it in 1hr 20), but now I have a very painful, outside, left foot, just forward and below my ankle.

There's no swelling or discolouration, it's just very painful to stand on. I can rock and balance on my heels, and stand on my tip toes, but flat it's pretty painful, as is walking. It's painful if I prod it.

Anybody any idea what I've done?

I dont fancy sitting in A&E for hours on end (and it will be unitl the small hours of the morning, as I finish late), just to be told it's probably bruising which will come out later.

I'd just RICE it and see how it goes for now, if you still have all the range of movement you described I wouldn't of thought it is anything serious.

Not really suprising something is sore if you have never run that far before!!

Give it a couple of days and then see how it feels but I wouldn't worry too much, especially if it only occured after the run and not during.

as above - but no running for 2 weeks after it stops hurting.

I ignored this advise in august (as was training for a HM) and i still cant run 200m without my achilles aching the next day - tried plenty of exercises so its physio next.

edit: appreciate it doesnt sound the same injury as my achilles, but my advise still stands. I did my shoulder in doing pull ups 3 weeks ago. Just started doing assisted pull ups again today no problem

I would agree with the 2 weeks bit for a serious pull type injury but by the sound of it he has just overworked it.

If it doesn't hurt after a few days I would just start jogging gently to see how it feels and take it from there. You can't take two weeks off training just for a bit of muscle soreness...are you crazy man! You'd never get through a season like that! (Talking from a runners perspective here though)

As with all injuries listen to your body, if it doesn't hurt run on it and if it does don't!

Hmmm.. I'm not too bothered about training over Christmas, as I can cycle to keep the cardio going (I'm more of a mountain biker), and I wasn't planning on too much running in that time, only a couple of 10k runs at the most.

I dance quite a lot, so annoyed that I won't be able to attend some events over the Christmas period.

I'm on day 3 and still in loads of pain, standing on it illicits pain on my outer edge and just under my ankle. Walking is still very painful.

I've booked a doctor appointment for Monday, as it's the earliest they can see me, but depending on how things go today, I may be sitting in A&E waiting for a referral to a specialist tonight.

Are you icing it frequently?

Only before i go to bed, as I'm out from 6 until about 11 each day. I'm going to go to RunnersWorld or boots in a bit and see if I can get a freeze compress and some freeze spray.

The Doctor will probably prescribe a course of anti-inflammatory medication (Ibuprofen or stronger providing its not contra-indicated).

If you don't have a history of stomach ulcers etc I'd start taking 400mg of Ibuprofen 3 times a day alongside the rest right away.

Increasingly the NHS is moving towards self-referral for Physio services too, -cutting out the GP visit first. Check this out locally.

If you press on the area with your fingers do you get the same pain? Wondering if it's some kind of stress fracture?!

Sounds like you've got an impaction injury of the lateral malleolus impacting into the cuboid, if it's spongy there, it'll be a bursa too. X ray might not be conclusive but rest is important and a trip to a podiatrist might be needed for insoles

And you've got a tendonosis by the sounds of it. No running at all or you risk a rupture and get some one to laser it for you. Contact omega laser systems for people in your area who can help

Cheers, havent done any running since august, never heard of laser treatment on achilles.

I have been trying esoteric (sp) stretching and it seems to help - thoughts?
