Pain, a strangely useful evolutionary mechanism.
Not very pleasurable, but required to preserve normal function.
Feck the science, what is the most pain you have ever experienced?
A broken bone, parturition, reception up the back passage sans lubrication.
I have broken a leg once, but the most pain and suffering I recall is as a 6 year old, being absolutely battered in the face by a large snowball at close range. The misery and cold was unbearable.

Lets see, some dumbass surgeon using continous nylon thread to stitch me back up after an op, and then leaving it too long to take them out. When they did take them out, the skin had started to grow over the stitches and upon cutting them with a scalpel blade, i was heard on the floor i was on, plus the floor above and below, so thats about 10 wards all heard me, mind you, i was only 11 at the time whereas now, i would just pass out like the big girls blouse that i am.
being stun by a sting ray hurt quite a bit - luckily it was juvenile, so the barb only went 3/4 through my foot. The 800 metre hop off the beach was not pleasant.
Having some dumb jnr doc trying to relocate my dislocated and broken thumb, without believing me that is was broken, also hurt a bit
