Accidental experiment - sleep problems solved?

To outline the issue = and keep it brief, I have suffered from sleep problems since turning 20ish.
Symptoms never being able to get to sleep, poor quality of sleep if I do, and serious trouble geting up in the morning.
Sleep apnea has been ruled out, have been on a selection of various anti-depressants and sleeping tablets as the doctors have narrowed it down to generalised anxiety disorder. I have never felt anxious or depressed, but friends have described me as sometimes appearing a bit on edge and jumpy for no reason - so I guess to me it is "normal" therefore I don't notice.
So here I am, just turned 30, slightly overweight, some exercise and job related exercise in that. On Mirtazapine which works quite well for the getting to sleep issue.
The reason for this post - based on the above history - This week I have been getting to bed about 11:30pm (usually in bed by just past 10ish), and getting up at my usual time of 06:45. Although struggling to get up initially more than usual, I feel great throughout the day, full of energy and sleep well at night.
Looking for other experiences really, as this forum is usually populated by hardworking career driven people like myself. Could I have been trying to get too much sleep, and would this cause the opposite effect in some people?

I've just started uni, used to go to bed fairly early (1030) and get up around 7. Sometimes found it hard to sleep, found it difficult to get up in the morning. Now I'm regularly going to bed around 3am and getting up about 8, probalby not good for me but I sleep well and feel pretty good during the day, don't even find it hard to get up.

You need to ideally wake up when one cycle of sleep is completed - ranging from 6-8 hours for different people.
I feel utterly awful when I go through part of another cycle and find it extremely hard to wake up and do something useful - like on weekends when I go back to bed after waking up at the normal time for work.
