I don't think I have the balls to do this myself but it looks good on the face of it...

£2500 for a fortnight in a halls type environment with Internet, pool table, DVDs, books, daily papers and magazines and nightly entertainment.

Is this just to make you feel comfortable whilst they fk up your future health or is the danger minimal?

Anyone taken part?

Depends what it's for. They're not allowed to base payment on risk - payment must be determined by time and inconvenience to the subject. The fact it's made it to trial means it's very safe, but things still go wrong from time to time.

It depends what it is for? medicine? clinical psychology? I know with all psych trials ethics need to be granted to run any trials, and I can't see how you're future health would be ruined from living somewhere else for a couple of weeks. They will be observing something but there will be a disclaimer and breif.

Why do you need balls to do that? it's not going to be MKULTRA or anything! I'd do it!

Tempting, but I can imagine in about 10 years time trying to think why my fingers are dropping off or something like that...

I'd do it, but only if I got the placebo.

yes Or, go look up "Thalidomide"

It isn't called a "Trial" for nothing. Due to the nature of pharmaceuticals development there are always stages where they don't know for sure what the result will be. Make your own decisions, but never forget that they can maim or kill. It might not even be the 'subject'.

ETA- be wary about the Wiki page on Thalidomide; in some parts of the world it was still available decades after the dates they give in the 'abstract'.

i work for a clinical trials company, doing all the logistics and distribution to all different trials around the world, and it's VERY rare for something to go wrong. We send out hundreds of shipments of drugs to trial sites every day.

Covance in Leeds is where I've been aswell.

Your quite right - you even get paid a small sum just fur turning up to a medical and getting a 'body MOT'.

And yes, it is dangerous. Thats the reason you get paid a foru figure sum for otherwise spending 3 or 4 nights sitting on your ass watching DVD's!

If you sign up, they will send you info on upcoming trials.

The important thing is you HAVE to be available on all the dates - a typical one would be a medical to check suitability. Once put forward you might go for an outpatient visit - if you dont pass this you'll get a small sumn for your troubles.

If you do pass - then maybe a 4 day, 3 night stay.

After than, then maybe 2 outpatient visits at week intervals.

It works well for students, or perhaps if your self employed going through a quiet patch.

Each study calls for people of different medical background, sometimes with specific ailments such as asthma.

Generally though they go for youngish fit healthy males.

Smoking, heavy drinking, recerational 'substance' use, all writes you off, and they do find out because you do lots of blood tests. And if you get through then break their dietary/lifestyle requirements then you dont get paid.

The information you get from them is superb, they are very informative, and I guess that the volunteers are by far there most important asset so they look after you well.
You can pull out at any time, no questions asked.

Personally I would recomend it. I guess that people who 'believe' in science are more likely to look at it with an open mind.

i did one with medeval in manchester when i was at uni.

you have a medical and they look at your medical history. they rule you out for certain trials [i have a history of migraine and even than was enough to preclude me from things] then send you a list from time to time of any upcoming trials.

if any interest you then you go along to the briefing where they tell you what dates you'd be required and what the dietary requirements are leading upto it. if you agree you get another medical and they accept you as a candidate.

i was on a trial for a drug about to go on the market. it affected blood pressure so they needed to know how it was affected by patient diet [red meat etc.]. so it was a case of eat, take drug, sit back and relax.

i had the placebo, which was nice [didn't find this out until afterwards] and was paid £750 for 2nights in their unit with very good food and some lovely nurses smile the only inconvenience was the tap they put in my vein [to avoid having to use a needle for the hourly sample] and collect all my piss in a bottle. you are allowed visitors and i had my laptop etc. to do uni work.

i am unemployed from the end of the month and hadn't thought about this. i will be signing up again. leeds is close to me so if you PM me the details snotrag i'll stick your name on the forms.

My flatmate did it in Edinburgh to fund a trip round the world - he loved it! Although I am sure the stories about all the scantily clad nurses might not have been all that accurate. In fact he went back to do it again but was put off as they wanted to cut off his big toe, then sew it back on - something to do with testing nerve endings? Not sure I believed that story either mind!
