I have to take 2 Senna tablets each night to be able to go once each morning.

If I do not take the tablets, I may go 5-6 days without going.

I then become very bloated and suffer quite bad pain.

I'm 36, well within Height/Weight limits, eat 3 meals a day, lots of fluids.

Any ideas?

Eating enough fibre?

Although I'm sure a lack of fibre alone wouldn't cause such constipation.

These three meals: any fresh fruit and vegetables?

This fluids: avoiding coffee/tea/coke/caffeine/alcoholic drinks? (These are diuretics and encourage the body to remove water from the body and stool and deposits this water into your bladder.)

Something definitely isn't right...

Breakfast is either cereal, toast or banana.

Lunch is normally a sandwich with a piece of fruit.

Evening meal is normally home cooked and could be anything.

1-2 take aways a week.

A glass or 2 every other night.

No major sugar intake as don't have it in tea.

Tea at home is decaf.

Probably drink 6-8 cups at work which does have caffeine in.

Tend to drink a lot of Pepsi Max at night.

1) What's in the sandwich?
2) What is "anything" for dinner? Just cos it's home made doesn't mean it's good for you...
3) Way too much coffee if 6-8 a day! Try cutting down to one! Drink water. Or herbal teas like peppermint tea.
4) Way too much fizzy drinks. Try cutting down to one can a day! Drink water. Oh, already said that.

You shouldn't need to take any drugs to have a regular poop. Have you tried a lentil curry? You'll feel like your organs have fallen out the next morning. biggrin

As an aside:
"Some evidence suggests that a high intake of caffeine and salt can increase the amount of calcium lost in urine. There is also concern that phosphoric acid used in fizzy drinks may leach calcium from bones. So if you are at an increased risk of osteoporosis, it may be sensible to limit your intake of these foodstuffs." from http://nutritionandfitness.axappphealthcare.co.uk/...

Go on a proper strict diet ( I don't mean diet as in losing weight diet I mean the proper eating type)and see what happens.

That way we can rule out anything more serious.

Ham salad, chicken, prawn.

Nothing high in fat or sugar for dinner.

6-8 cups of tea, not sure if that is any better than coffer.

Regularly eat at a pakistani friend's house. Have tried not talking tablets and eat various curries, lentils, rice when there, next day, nothing.

Define "proper"?

I thought my diet was ok...

Dont bother with bread, wont do your digestion any favours and is st for you anyway.

Try switching your carb sources to higher fibre types. Oats, sweet potato, brown rice, fibrous veg (broccoli, green beans etc)

The boxed cereals you get are st. You might as well eat the box they came in for the goodness you get out of them. Oats in the morning. Lay off the caffeine, thats st for you too.

Get rid of the tea nad pepsi.

Lots of water, make sandwich with brown bread for lunch, have 2 pieces of fruit. In the morning have 2 pieces of fruit and some cereal if you want.

With the evening meal havea copious amount of veges.

Throughout the day have plenty of water and snack on fruit if you want.

This is only a temporary measure for maybe arouund 2 weeks, you may just need this to get your bowels moving! Have plenty of fibre.

Or you can do a spring clean winkwinkwink

1) chicken/prawn with salad?
2) Yes, but do you have fresh vegetables with it? Spagbol isn't unhealthy but doesn't contain any vegetation.
3) I didn't say tea. I said herbal tea. Big difference.
4) But these curries are with your current lifestyle and crap drinks.

Need to change radically, really.

Try 'All Bran' for breakfast. Works for me. Works too well some days.

Yes.

Tomorrow morning, drink two or three mugs of hot tea before you take anything else. Drink them reasonably quickly.

If you want something even more effective, then try a teaspoon of Andrews Liver Salts first thing in the morning.

Things that work for me;
Hydrate hydrate hydrate, that cannot be stressed enough (stop drinking tt max)
eat fibrous veg as advised
drop a spoonful of Linwoods flax onto your cereal.
eat some of those ready made John West 250calorie tuna meals (I lived of them these week and have gone twice a day)
And for when I needed a lil extra I bought this, benefiber
http://www.benefiber.com/

Also get some exercise. Doesn't need to be Daley THompson. Go for a walk at lunch time, just get off your arse. Somebody told me last week that exercise is important for regular movements and that people in wheelchairs usually have trouble going.

Good post, Halb. I forgot about linseed/flax seeds. Can be sprinkled on salads, too. When they come in contact with liquid (water or bile) they secrete a goo that lubricates stool.

As for exercise, something involving twisting eg yoga could be good, too.

Fecking Nora paoloh, stop taking senna as a regular thing.

Senna is a stimulant laxative and over time your bowel will come to rely on the 'stimulus' and stop working properly. -Then you'll be beginning to embrace glycerine suppositories or phosphate enemas.

See your GP. He/She may well prescribe an Osmotic laxative like Lactulose which stops the gut sucking all the fluids out of your st as it moves slowly through the bowel, (-basically keeps the stool softer and doesn't do damage).

The old 'laxatives are the most abused drug' statement nurses and doctors spout remains true.
