I avoid painkillers unless it gets really bad in which case I have to ,to stay out of Hospital.Hot shower on the lower back does it for me.I get pretty lean sometimes.

If it's low back, watch out! Spinal disc trouble. You've probably heard the term 'slipped disc' which is a misnomer. They don't 'slip', and they don't just 'go', you get plenty of warning, sometimes ages before. They rupture and if it presses against the sciatic nerve (largest nerve in the body) it can be absolute agony. Guess where the sciatic nerve goes? Through the pelvis and down your leg to your foot. The pain can run the whole length or just appear in one place. 'Pain in the Butt' the Yankee term or our 'Pain in the Ass' comes from this!

Most people when they get this pain freeze up, the muscles go into spasm... ie you can hardly move. When the disc does go you really cannot move, well, only in agony.
Best thing is combined rest AND excercise and painkillers (don't be a martyr!).
I could go on forever but best book on the market is 'The Back Sufferer's Bible' by physio Sarah Key. You'll learn everything about your back you never knew.

I found out and learnt the hard way. One tip, NEVER get into your car like the majority... ie the 'stupid' one foot in, twisted back and sit down. Believe me! Sit your ass on the seat and swing your feet in.

2 discs low down disintegrated 10 years ago.i went for the pre op but when they told me what they were going to do I walked away.

when its bad, HEAT is best.It is rarely bad these days ,just when I over do it.

Exercise seems to get the blood flowing and reduces the inflamation where the nerve is getting squished.
Just have tio be careful.
Worse thing I ever did was go to a chiropractor. He destroyed what was left of my back.
