Well the st storm keeps on coming:

My mother has had breathing difficulties for a few months which got really bad when the field across the road from the house was harvested and the pollon affected my mothers asthma.... my father took her away and it got a bit better then they came back and it was a bit up and down.

Then when my Granddad died her breathing difficulties had hit an all time low point to the stage were she couldnt walk much and as such missed the funeral...

The doctors at the time said it was asthma and eventually decided to put her on steroids as she has had difficulty speaking without coughing and being short of breath.

Yesterday she got admitted to hospital (she did it herself)... was comfortable but has a very low blood pressure due to the medium that they need in her for the CT scan.

Last night she got admitted to ICU, presumably for the same reason as its now suspected there are blood clots on her lungs (hence the difficulty breathing and it wasnt the asthma)... fking great!!

So she is on cancer drugs due to breast cancer, high blood pressure pills and colestarol pills, very over weight and now on this medium so we can see what the hell is up and Im kind of scared....

My father is in the Congo trying to get home, Im on stand by in london waiting to go.

But I would like some friendly doctor to explain what could be up and if the move to ICU is a precautionary one or not? And if it is blood clots, what the next steps are?

(I cant get through to ICU at the moment to find out myself)

This is not turning out to be a happy Xmas...

I hope you take this post in the right way but she could help herself a lot by losing some weight.

(I am medically trained).

Does she smoke?

She is eating better now and no so many rich foods so has lost a bit, but she was active (radiographer by trade) until the breathing issues and no she doesnt smoke and is only 56 so not old... I want at least another 20 years out of her at least.

Now got info out that one reason they put her in ICU is for monitoring her more closely, she is comfortable and its also so she can have oxygen to help with the asthma (or whatever it is) that is causing the breathing difficulties.

Still not allowed to ring ICU to find out any updates frown

Google COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and tell me if you think this might be her problem. COPD is (generally) a smokers disease (that's why I asked if she smoked) but can affect non-smokers.

(Note to smokers: read about COPD: this is what you are facing if you don't give up....)

So that when she goes for a CT scan they can see her internals... bit like a barium meal I supposed but injected or something

No to sputum and she rarely gets chest infections, the cough is more of a tickly cough that is affecting her... no talking she is fine, start talking on the phone and then the cough starts.

I know this is probably of no comfort to you but ICU is the best place for your mum. I have been admited to ICU with my breathing twice and it is by far a better level of care in ther. She will have low ratio nursing, if not one to one, all the specialist equipment there is available and any specialist knowledge needed on hand. She is far more likely to be given the treatment she needs there than in a normal ward where the nurses are short staffed, run ragged and trying to attend to 3 wards at the same time. I hope your mum gets the relief she deserves, sounds like she has had a time of it being past about and it does drive you mad after a while.

My Gran is in the same situation at the moment. Being treated for Cancer, the calyx chemotherapy seems to have resulted in blood clots in the lungs.

The diagnosis is pleurisy. She is having injections to try and break up the clots (if that is the right term) and is on oxygen to help her breathing.

You may find that your mum has some fluid on the lungs that need draining (or at least that's what we're finding with gran).

Problem is, the chemo has had to stop which is a nuisance as this is a fairly aggresive cancer that needs a good kick into the long grass ASAP.

Fingers crossed for a recovery all round.

The blood clots were misdiagnosed as asthma and got quite bad, she is now out of ICU and in a normal ward, she is on anti blood clotting drugs and was taken off the cancer drugs.

She should be back to normal soon, but cant go back on the medium to do a scan as she almost lost her kidneys (they are working fine now) so she will probably need to go on the nuclear medicine to do the next scan.

In addition to the blood clots in the lung she got one in the leg.. think DVT!!

She is probably going to be on the anti clotting drugs now for the rest of her life and is not a happy person.

Strangely though, the changes to her life style mean no more greens or dairy, but lots of meat and fatty stuff??

Hope gran gets better soon..

Cheers Simon. My gran is on a high protein diet now - basically baby food. She has the opposite problem, can't consume enough food. These things are sent to test us as they say.

Low Carb, this is a way to lose the weight without needing to exercise.
As a compulsive fatty and a lazy exerciser I've been doing pretty well with this regime:
