Hernia op tomorrow
Discussion
Having an inguinal hernia repair tomorrow but only having a local anesthetic. I'm questioning whether I did the right thing opting for this method ie in and out in a couple of hours as opposed to staying in overnight and having the full anesthetic.
Any of you guys been through this type of hernia op and how was it? Never been under the knife in my life so feeling a little apprehensive at the moment.

You'll get to have a good chat to the surgeon and theatre staff, will most likely recover (as in you'll be awake and not have the side effects of a general) quickly and you'll be home in a comfy bed with all your stuff around you, having a good nights sleep, good food and unlimited visiting hours.
Good luck with it

I did not enjoy mine and found it very uncomfortable but to be fair I was my own worse enemy by training to early and going out on my motorbike, had to get my brother to pick me up, I drove the car back him on my bike.
So moral of the stroy do as your told and you'll be fine.
Good luck.

Thanks guys; the annoying thing is that I should have had the op in September, but I had a phone call 3 hours before it was due to say that there was a problem with the air con in the operating theatre and all ops were cancelled for that day.
Maybe I'll get another call tomorrow morning to say the surgeon's gone down with swine flu or something

Don't worry about the local, you won't feel a thing, if you do start to feel it slightly which you shouldn't, they'll put some more local in. Ops like this are pretty routine stuff, you'll be back home before you know it.
I had a carpal tunnel op a few weeks back, was pretty strange walking into the operating theatre and climing up onto the table.

Just a quick update! I was wheeled into the operating theatre at 2.45pm and was on my way home at 4.00pm! Still full of anaesthetic at the moment so can't feel much but I'm sure that will all change during the night. Bit of a weird experience feeling the surgeon tugging at your insides, but true to his word I felt no pain. They have given me 3 different types of pain killer, so hopefully I'll be able to get through the next few days in relative comfort. First and hopefully last time in hospital!
How you getting on?
my neighbour walked to work, a couple of miles by the end of the 1st week. In contrast i could hardly walk from the station to work, 250m, over 2 weeks later! The hardest, longest, most painful experience i have ever had.
Still get a few sharp pains in the op area 2 years later, but go to the gym lots and was running a fair bit earlier this year so its not too bad, just abit inconvienient

I'm doing really well thanks! Kept waiting for the pain to kick in but it never did thankfully. I heard loads of horror stories and people telling me I'd be incapacitated for several weeks but it's been a breeze so far touch wood. Surgeon told me the only thing I should avoid is picking up anything heavy so it has to be half pint glasses Been out in the car to take the dogs out and had no problems driving or walking so it seems I've been relatively lucky so farmy neighbour walked to work, a couple of miles by the end of the 1st week. i dont think i drove for 4 weeks! Glad you are getting on well
Out of interest, was yours done under a local anaesthetic like mine, or did you have a general? From the small amount of research I've done, it seems that the recovery rate is better when done under a local. I was also told by the nursing staff that I had one of the best surgeons in the South West, so whether that has a bearing on the matter I really don't know. I was talking to him whilst he was delving around inside, and he said that my hernia was rather large I had open surgery on mine and was driving the second day, and back at work within a week.
Got another one now on the other side, and am having keyhole on that as opposed to open, and would like to be back to work withing 4-5 days.
Both under knock out, don't want to feel or see what they're doing. Mine is on the 11th of dec.

I had a hernia op about four months ago, under general anaesthetic. I was under for about 40 mins, and apart from a small amount of discomfort, felt OK when I came around. Unfortunately, when they removed the breathing tube from my mouth, they took a couple of cm's of the skin from my bottom lip with it & it hurt like fk.
I was told to take two weeks off work, but took two days as I couldn't afford the time off, so had to drive etc but took it really easy. I had the most mahoosive bruise across my stomach for two weeks, but no long term issues/problems etc.

My turn tomorrow. This will be my second hernia op this year because the first one failed. G.A both times but then again my hernia is of the incisional variety. This year has been a real bh because of it so here's to a great 2010. This time I'm taking to my bed and not moving for six weeks to make sure it's fixed this time.
