This may sound like a silly question, but Mon-Fri I walk for about 80-90 minutes a day. I walk very quickly (I think around 5mph). Is this in any way bad for me? I do other exercise too on top of this. I damaged my knees by running too much a few years ago so I'm very cautious now!

any thoughts appreciated! Sorry if it's a daft question biggrin

I suppose it'll build your calf muscles up which may be unsightly? Could get flat feet? You could be accused of being a homo for speedwalking.

Probably everything is bad for you in too high a dose, but you're OK with that much daily - especially if that's what you've been doing for a while.

Are you knees hurting now? I'd make sure you're walking in suitable shoes but apart from that, should be fine.

On a related note how easy would walking 9 miles a day be? I'm tempted to walk to work but it's 4.3 miles away and I'm a lard arse biggrin

Not walking, no. My knees do feel a bit weird if I run up stairs too much, but I can manage a 20 minute run ok so I guess they're fine. I'm wearing custom insoles from a podiatrist in proper walking and proper running shoes for each activity. It's a real shame about my knees because I'd got under 90 mins in training for my first ½ marathon and was really enjoying the pace. You'd have thought at under 70kg I could run without too many problems!

It might be slower, that's just a guess. I'll measure it sometime.

edited to say: I've measured my route to work on a map and I walk at 4.5mph/7.2kph. That is actually a jog for my girlfriend, so you're quite right; if we're late for somewhere I relax and walk at my usual speed and she jogs alongside biggrin

one and half to two hours walking, you will end up sweaty. The return will be a bd especially if you walk past pubs chippies or similar as you will be tempted. A bike would probably make more sense

My shins hurt when I walk for short distances. I have no problem on the treadmill or rowing machine, just on the street.

I hate not have a car.

Depends what shoes you have and what surface, I walk to work about 3 miles aday, and I need to use shoes with a man made sole, when I use expensive leather sole shoes I get a bad lower back.
