Ive been doing weights in the gym and im happy with the progress ive been making over the last couple of months, however ive started to get pains in both my wrists whilst doing some exercises. Mostly Benching.
Anybody got any recommendations as to how to prevent this? I.e. strapping my wrist up with something whilst working or exercises to stop it from hurting ?

Cheers all

Most likely you are doing it wrong.
Read the below. Especially with advice given on grip.

Most common problem is people turning their wrists too far back when benching.

Basically (assuming this is the problem), you want to keep a straight arm from elbow to fist so that the weight (be it barbell or dumbbell) is directed straight down your forearm. The bar itself should be resting much closer to your wrist, almost on the heel of your hand.

If it's really sore I'd suggest taking a few days off until the pain subsides, otherwise you're not going to feel any difference. When you do get back to it though, it should feel like a much stronger, more solid position.

My wrists were screwed from this last year.

Now most of my bech work is done on dumbells as it doesn't cause the issue.

I have a similar problem. Without training I'd be quite skinny and have small joints. I've got some gloves from powerhouse fitness which have elastic/velcro wrist supports. Main thing is to get your technique good as Animal says.

cheers guys.

The problem occurs with dumbells or bars which is annoying. My wrists arent very flexible at all. I cant press up with palms on the floor as they dont bend far enough.

Might try the gloves to see if it forces my technique to improve but for now I will rest it for a while and concentrate on my grip when i go back to it.

Hiya Dusty. Not sure what you mean by the above. You are not meant to bend your wrist at all. your elbow to fist should be as straight as a rule. Have you read the article I posted?
What is meant by "palms on the floor"?

Fairly obvious halb..

he cannot do a press up because his hands will not bend to that angle..

I didn't read it as obvious:P, he referenced benching in is first post, then talked aboot pressing up, in my mind that meant pressing the weight up from the benchbiggrin Thanks for explaining it;)
Even so, the angle of how you press up doesn't relate to bench, if he benches correctly, he shouldn't get that issue since the wrist should be straight in the bench, as opposed to bent in the press/push up.
Of course with press/push ups you can always vary it by pushing from fists, or from push-up bars.

Sorry was just highlighting the fact my wrists have issues anyway and that this could be a factor in it.

I will take the advice and I have read the article, it was very handy.
Cheers

You obviously got a bio mechanical problem there then mate, would not hurt to see a physio and get some answers of someone who can do an assessment.
