Afternoon,

Anyone got a decent set of body fat % / calorie calulator type scales?

I had some (tanita??) I think, they served their purpose pretty well but hadnt used them in a few years and they seem to have died so I need a new set.

Dont need them to be some super expensive designer looking things, my bathroom is a dump anyway! smile Just as accurate as you can expect home scales to be.

Ta!

(or should I just be moaning at my Gym they should be getting a set?)

I thought the most accurate measure was calipers. That said, as long as you use the same method of measurement I don't think it matters because you'll be able to monitor your progress.

Thats the idea really, I dont care if I'm "actually" 25 or 26% lard, its more a case of monitoring my progress from whatever I start at to whatever I end up at... if that makes sense...

Absolutely!

I used to use the crappy machine in Boots, which told me I was about 16%, but when I actually had someone measure me with calipers I was 10.8% - talk about a difference! Obviously I have had some pie love since then...

blimey, thats a big difference, how does it work with calipers? pinch and measure the flab at various parts around the body, then do some maths on your weight to work out a percentage?

I'll have to have a google on how to measure it with calipers, after all calipers are a tool, and every PHer needs tools!

Basically yes: there are different methods of calculation depending on how many measurements are taken (I had mine done on 7 or 8 sites). The difficult part is pinching fat, not skin, which is why it apparently takes about a thousand measurements before you become good at it. Honestly, your best bet is to go to your gym and ask if they can measure you. They should do it for free.

hehe

I had some Chinese love last night (no, not that type) and I'm feeling about 5 pounds heavier for it this morning.

You won't even get an accurate relative measurement from the scales. They use electrical pulses and are affected by how hydrated you happen to be.

Most accurate method is to find someone who is competent and knowledgeable in the use of calipers. Always use the same person to measure you and the more points measured in theory the more accurate the results. I purchased some electronic calipers of interweb for about £50 iirc. Still haven't used the thing yet!
