Hi I have all the symptoms of fungal nail infection on my big toe. So I went to the doctor to get it confirmed. The doc sent a nail clipping to get tested and it came back negative? Wtf? So the doctor is now saying it is not that, but I know it is as I have all the symptoms I have read online. What do I do?

I've been putting tea tree oil on mine each day for a few weeks now with little effect.

How long does it take these oils to work?

May be worth giving 'Curanail' or 'Loceryl' lacquer a try as you can get it in chemists. It not a quick treatment - weekly applications for 9-12 months!!!!!!!

I had a couple of toe nails infected (big and third), mine was diagnosed as athletes foot and after sending off cuttings, I was prescribed some tables. A 12 week course, one tablet a week. It cured one of the two infected nails completely. I was also told to apply the lacquer but I used to forget, so I still have a mild infection in my big toe as that didn't completely grow out.

I was warned about the tablets liver toxicity by my consultant. I did not notice anything when taking them.

Nail cultures are not a 100% test, but if you have had athletes foot previously or now then discolouration, and changes in texture are likely to be fungal infection. There are other reasons that your nail could have changed in appearence, maybe you should consult a Podiatrist.

With regard treatment it's not an easy one. Tea tree oil was suggested as being effective, but research hasnt really borne this out. If the discolouration is recent then you may find an antifungal cream is helpful (such as Lamisil). I cured mine with this a couple of years ago!

The trouble with these infections is that the area of activity is between the nail and the skin (under nail) in the main and so topicals dont really get to the business end.

Tablets taken orally can be useful but there can be side effects and wouldnt routinely be prescribed for a single nail.

Also something to bear in mind is that nail deformity can linger after the bugs have gone, if the nail is badly disfigured then you might need to think about having it removed.

i think it all started when i had athletes foot couple years ago. i actually got rid of that. slowy started realsing the yellow ish and thick the nail started becoming. its only recently it has started to bother me. i might just try one of the treatments such as cure a nail etc

I picked one of those up in Nicaragua a few months ago but my entire foot swelled up for about a week (now its just the nail that looks weird), cant see the doctor as they are too full..

the drop in centre (a wonderful place) just told me to wait until the nail falls off and then the fungus will go.... not sure if thats correct ?

I had manky toe nails too, for about 10 years.

Six or seven years ago I had a clipping taken and it came back saying it was not a fungus and so nothing was done.

About 3 months ago I went back to the doc on another matter to do with feet, I had splits around my heel in the thick skin after a holiday in flip flops.

I happened to mention the manky nails, he took one look and said ti was fungus, prescribed Terbafine for six months.

I'm 3 months in and the transformation is huge, they look loads better! I commented to Mrs Huntsman last night that they are nearly good enough to suck! (its not going to happen apparently)

Get on a course of Terbafine.

ETA - side effects - farting, lots of it, loud! Comdey value!

The best course of action to cure a fungal nail infection is Lamisil tablets. It takes about six months to cure while the nail grows out, but the nail returns to normal with no disfigurement whatsoever. Lamisil tablets are very expensive, but they are worth the cost.

I had a fungal infection and curanail fixed it within a couple of months. It had been like it for years but wasn't that bad, my then oh told me to sort it out!
I also had athletes foot around and underneath my small toes, the skin was open and red. Turned out I wasn't drying my feet properly! Couldn't believe it was only that.

Feet all nice and lovely now. thumbup
