As it says.

I have list hearing in my right ear due to an accident, just wondered if anyone can advise how long it will take for me to compensate with the other one- ie- stop cocking my head around like some kind of radar trying to get a better position to listen in.

Ps: first one to say 'pardon' wins nothing at all!!

I have reduced hearing in my right side, caused through dodgy gromits that didn't come out when they were supposed to and an even dodgier doctor that allowed them to stay in despite knowing they were causing damage, but anyway!!

I have to hold a phone to my left ear and if I am in the passenger seat of a car I have to turn right round to hear the driver talking properly. Also, if someone is sat on my right side they can quite happily have a full conversation with me without me hearing a thing, works a treat with the missus!

In terms of getting used to it though, I have been like this since I was 21, so about 5 years now and it just becomes natural. If the phone rings, even if its in my right hand the phone goes straight to my left ear, same with being in a car, if I'm a passenger I automatically turn to the driver when I get in the car.

You just get used to it I'm afraid. By the way what did you do to cause it??

I blew myself half to pieces using radio controlled plane fuel.
Ow doesn't come close to covering it.
Managed to burn ear, through the drum and destroy all the little worky bits in my ear.

I was trying to light a chimera (not a TVR one) in my garden the other evening and thought I would get something from the garage to "help" it along. I remembered your post and stuck with kindling.

I hope you are not in as much discomfort and wish you all the best for the future.

My hearing's fairly bad, although I'm not properly deaf.

I assume it stems from spending the best part of 3 years towing and driving a very loud Caterham with a very loud Land Rover. If I drove further than Silverstone, I'd still be able to hear the Landy an hour after I got out of it.

OUCH! I had a perforated ear drum with massive inner ear infection and was temporarily deaf for about a month.
Hated it. TV sounded wrong. People took the piss and...This will seem odd...I missed listening to my music properly.

Hi Stuart

I was born with a hearing impairment, which progressed / evolved into partial deafness as I got older.

Anything you want to know, just ask or feel free to PM me.

Cheers ian.

I just want to know what length of time it will likely take to adapt to the difference.
At the moment, I'm twisting my head round like a right tt, trying to hear what's going in.
Hopefully it won't be too long?
Thanks fir taking the time to answer

Me too hehe

Stuart

To be honest, without knowing the exact details of your hearing loss, the question of acclimitisation is a hard one to answer - have you visited an audiologist yet? If not, my advice would be to arrange a consultation with an ENT specialist in the first instance, then you will most probably end up being referred to an audiologist, in the assumption your bad ear will respond to a hearing-aid.

Personally speaking, since I was born with ste hearing, I have never really had to get "used" to it as such. However, back in 1999, I lost what little hearing I had remaining in my left ear, pretty much within 12hrs. As a result, I had to adjust to only being able to hear from my right ear. This took quite a bit of adjustment, but still not quite as drastic as someone who previously had 100% hearing capacity.

You will have to re-think many everyday things, such as your seating at a table - if you end up anything like me, you'll learn very quickly to strategically position yourself in such a way that allows you to maximise the hearing you have.

As for "directing" your head / good ear towards the origin of sounds, this is something that you'll probably never get away from doing, simple physics dictate this, so my advice is to not worry about it so much and just let it become a natural movement for you.

I know this will all be very traumatic for you, but I can definitely assure you that you *will* adapt quicker than you'd think possible. To keep it petrol-related, the human brain has a spectacular ability to "drive around" problems and get the best out of what may not be the most efficient chassis driving

Cheers for that ian.

Hearing was fine until the incident.

I have been to various units so far- all with the same conclusion- it's fked sir.

Fairly upbeat about it all- could be dead, so in the overall scheme if things a good result.

Mind you, mrs emsnan can fk right off if she thinks I am going to replace the surround sound!
