Well I have finally hit 30, and although I used to be very fit and health, and never too fat, things have gone a bit the other way
My main problem is losing wieght and gaining the ability to get up earlier. I used to think nothing of being up at 6am every day, winter or summer. Now I can go to bed at 9.30pm and still struggle to get up at 8am the following morning.
I am here asking for advice from those who are able to get up early, and what the trick is. I simply cannot bring myself to crawl out of bed, it almost feels impossible.
Where I am now -
Very little excercise apart from various carpet jobs, Krav Maga once a week and a bit of walking around leaflet dropping. Weight approximately 17stone (6ft 1 height)
So has anyone managed to force themselves into a habit of getting up early, and is it a good idea to excercise (fast walking?) that early or would it just be counter productive?

Personally I think that some people are just not morning people. In the last 18 months (as I am heading towards the 30) I have upped the exercise, gotten fit, sorted out my diet(ish) and tried in vain to become a morning person.
It's all worked out, I hit the gym 5 times a week, run 3 times a week, cycle 30-35 miles a week, dance and do a host of other things. Can I get up in the morning? Hell no!
If I go to bed at 10:30 I feel just as bad each morning as when I go to bed at midnight.
I've found the best way is to do what my flat mate does, set successive alarms a good 1.5 hours before you need to wake up.
Although an ex-gf's mother used to swear by those daylight alarm lamp things.

You have picked the wrong time of year to start getting up early. I have been getting up at 6:15 to get down the gym at 6:30 for the last eight months. I walked out the house this morning in the pitch dark and it was almost freezing. Got down to the gym and only two or three of the regulars were. its very hard at this time of year.
Hmmm, I've found it easier getting up earlier as i've got older (well 27 now)
I get up every day at 6.45, somtimes I "lie in" till 7. I don't have to get up till 8, but I prefer cycling the 12 miles to work that driving it!
I find the following helps me:
No booze in week, I only drink Fridays or Saturdays and never weekdays
Get fit, I've always been fit, but have upped the ante recently and feel better for it
Healthy diet, everything in moderation, just don't eat crap all the time and loads of fruit and veg.
Make sure you are getting up early for something enjoyable! As said, I love the cycle in to work, so that inspires me to get up!
Routine! Dull but it helps, go to bed at set time and wake up at set time, this can take months for your body to learn but helps in the medium run

Routine. Make yourself get up earlier, it will be a huge struggle but it will get easier and after a few weeks you'll be used to it.
I used to be able to get up at 8am for work and still get in on time. Now I have to be up at 6am the latest and it's not that hard once you get through the first few weeks.

Are you watching me?!Well made it at 5.55am this morning - as said previously suggested this thread I have given up alcohol for the moment to let things settle down. Will probably take up cycling round the local woods as well when I can be arsed to collect and repair my bicycle.
I regularly get up at 5 and sleep is around 5 hours. For many years this has worked for me, but it's getting harder as I exercise less than I used to. Several years ago I was cycling 10-15 miles every morning and that made a big difference in energy levels. I would drink water before training and eat upon my return - usually 2 breakfasts within a 3 hour period.
Motivation plays a big part in being able to do this - too much to do during the days and at times sleep is little more than an inconvience.

While I have recently changed my lifestyle alot having embarked upon a weight loss mission, I still struggle to get out of bed virtually every morning. I've always been the same.
I exercise most evenings by swimming, walk daily, sauna and steam room most evenings, eat early and avoid sugar in the evenings. I sleep like a log, but simply do not want to get out of bed, especially when the house is coldish when I wake up! I simply love my bed and have to have at least 8 hours sleep.
The biggest difference I noticed to my waking habits is when I give up the smokes, as after a few days I tend to find it easier to get up on the alarm, but this is always short lived and lasts a couple of weeks tops. I presume it is just my body adapting to the lack of nicotine/carbon monoxide?
I'd love to be able to get up early. For some reason I was up on the button at 6am the other Sunday having gone to bed at 10:30. Blazing sun and warm outside. And in the time that I would usually spent in the land of nod on a Sunday morning (ie. until about 11am) I had watched the news, basked in the sun on the decking, taken the dog for a long walk, got the papers, had a nice breakfast, washed both cars and sorted the garage out. It was a much more productive day and it felt good to have such a productive day and actually feel ready for bed by about 10PM.

Do you snore? The reason i ask is you may have sleep apnoea and i was exactly the same until i got treated. i was tired during the day as well.
Tell us more. I snore (like a jet taking off apparently) and I'd be interested in the treatments. I could do with losing some wieght, I'm 6'2" and just over 16st, but I snored when I was slimmer too, although not as much. I often feel shattered in the morning, even after what I'd consider a good sleep.According to my girlfriend, I do snore badly when I have been drinking or when I have taken Zopiclone (relaxes the muscles?) Not too bad during normal sleep though (apparently I do talk a lot )
