Broken Toes - What to do?
Discussion
I've just broken a couple of toes, or at least I'm quite certain I have. I am aware that the hospital don't do anything other than tell you to rest and give you some pain killers. I'm not someone who usually takes pain killers, so I have no intention of sitting in A&E for 3 hours for the sake of confirmation.
The toes in question are my little toe and the one next to it on my right foot. They are already purple, swollen and they feel like jelly, so I'm sure my self diagnosis is probably fairly accurate.
So what's the best thing to do? Tape them up to my middle toe for support or just leave them to find their natural position? Am I being a stubborn git and should I just accept the faff of A&E to get the put into position properly?
Isn't PH great! Thanks in advance!

Did the same to my little toe a couple of months ago. As long as they look like they are where they should be I'd keep them in place with a bit of tape and raised above your knee above the hip whenever possible.
Yep I have broken most my toes at somepoint if its one of the bigger 3 id go to hospital - if not tape them and eleveate when you can. When it stops hurting take the tape off. my little toes are sideways now If they have turned a funny colour get yourself to A&E, just to be safe.
I fractured my little toe aged 16. Was running to answer the phone and caught it full swing on the leg of a coffee table.
Split the little bugger right down the middle. Was an odd sensation feeling the two pieces of bone rubbing against one another.
The docs just strapped it to my other toe, but it never changed colour.

Thanks for the replies.
I had a meeting I had to get to today, so I just strapped them up and used a Lekki hiking stick to help me hobble about like an old man. I'll have a look at them again later and get myself to A&E if they look particularly nasty. They hurt more now than they did this morning.

Do what Ranulph Fiennes did with his fingers, hold them in a vice and cut them off with a hacksaw.
Wasn't it a jigsaw on his Black and Decker Workmate?! I contemplated amputation, but don't want to effect my well perfected heel-toe skills.OllieWinchester said:
How did you do it? I broke my big toe last time by trying to use a road sign as stilts..
I dropped the top of a desk (a big heavy one) on my foot. It slid out of a box when the bottom of the box gave way.I had a meeting I had to get to today, so I just strapped them up and used a Lekki hiking stick to help me hobble about like an old man. Only go to A+E if they are either.....
A). Pointing in a very, very unnatural direction.
B). Excruciating pain that doesn't get any better (poss indication of critical lack of blood)
C). Both of the above.
Otherwise you'll just have to wait it out. Strapping doesn't really do anything either. Oh and be prepared for them, and the surrounding area, to turn all sorts of magical colours, just a bit of interfascial bleeding and stuff. Be reet.
Best bet is to use the RICE treatment (google it). And to start taking ibuprofen, take the max dosage as in the instructions to help reduce the inflammation and control the pain. Take them even if it doesn't hurt too badly, it'll speed up recovery a bit.
Oh and I once broke my R4th toe kicking someone at Thai boxing, I'm also a Podiatrist so know about feet. I feel your pain, hurts like a ba$tid initially.
