Root Canal Treatment question
Discussion
Hi all,
A couple of months ago was having terrible pain in my tooth, off to the dentist who did an xray and said there is a hole in my tooth, check xray for three years previous and there is nothing. Explains it is large and that he would try a filling. Had filling was better for a while then pain was getting really bad. Had antibiotics which cleared it up and confirmed that i would need a root canal. OK no problem so i need to spend more money and the filling was a waste of £100 but worth the try.
Root canal completed and everything is fine (molar by the way) then tonight having a bag of chips and my tooth brakes. The rear 1/6 of the treated tooth has just broken off. Think i swallowed the tooth. Now there is not any pain and there should not be but if feels very strange and i am a bit p!ssed off that i have spend the best part of £600 in total on this tooth and it has just fallen to bits.
I am going to call the dentist in the morning but can anyone tell me if i have any come back? The dentist said a 60% success rate after 5 years....this has been one month and it is falling apart.
Cheers

Root filled teeth are usually very weak, particularly a molar which takes the brunt of the force when chewing. It is widely accepted that a RT'd tooth will need a crown at some point, though a decent large bonded restoration (white composite etc.) should give some degree of strength. I don't think the dentsist will be to worried about repairing it if you went back in - I know I wouldn't. Its just a question of the inherent strength of the remaining tooth tissue, the RT sounds successful though.
Hope that helps a bit
