Wow, a weird evening. Visited a friend, he was not in but got talking to his missus just on the drive of their house, suddenly, a strange grunting noise, wandered round the back of the car to see a guy collapsed in the lane, fitting. HIs missus panics, I tied to keep cool, could not find mobly, so legged it in the house to cal 999. She came in and took over as she was screaming that he was not breathing, and tbh I could not describe their address, its in the contry and the lane is unanmed!

Ran outside, this guy is about 24stone, he has collapsed with his head in some bushes, for the life of me I could not move him, not even an inch. And the angle he was at, I could not get him on his back, he kept rolling over on the steep lane. Lips blue, I am not a first aider, but I could see he had no airway. His fist was clenched, his jaw was locked, and with his head int he bushes, I could not get close enough to work his airway anyway. We had nothing to work with, everything I asked for could not be found, bic pen to make a tube, hosepipe, I wedged something in his teeth to try to open his mouth, but it broke off.
Did chest compressions, after about 7 mins, realised it was getting hopeless, ran to the road to try to flag down help. All i got was two grunt like exhalations. His nose was full of sputum and I suspect his airway was clogged with it too.
A woman walkign by said she worked in a home, she came down and said, he was gone. He had had no pulse since I arrrived...

Ambulance and AIr Ambualnce arrived, it took three of them to move him, they eventually got an airway and started on him about 15 mins after he went down.
Unfortunately he was gone.

Mid thirties, looked like he was out joggin to get fit, not ID on him.
Police arrived and they knew him, or thought they did. Not sure in what capacity.

Poor sod. Sorry could not have done more, but realstically, I think he was gone before I even got to him.
Makes you think though.
Mates missus is upset understandably. But we did our best and if we had not been talkign on the drive, we'd never have heard it and he may have laid there hours.

RIP fella. Never knew you but very sad all the same.

Any idea what killed him? Heart attack? Or choking on something?

No idea. The cops took a statement and he said I may have to be available for the post mortem.....!! I told him I could weld a bit, but was not much cop with scalpels, and he realised his mistake!! So the Coroner's hearing I amy be called to.

My first thought was an epileptic fit, but he had no ID on him at all, nothing saying he suffered, no meds, nothing, I was asking him if he was epileptic, but of course no response.

Some form of seizure that maybe brought on a cardiac arrest..?
Weirdly, he also came out in a massive bruise size of a dinner plate above his knee within minutes of the incident.....

Can't thelp thinking if it had happneded at my house, I'd have had more stuff to try to get him breathing, tubes etc etc. But we could nto even find a BIC pen at my mate's. We caled him as he's quite an industrious guy, and works nearby, but by the time he got home, Ambulance was there, as his car broke down about 3/4 mile away. At least if he had been there, we could have moved him, and he probably would have been able to find a bit of tube or something.

But it really seemed to hapen so fast, and if I am honest, as soon as I got close to him I pretty much knew he was gone. Very sad

What a horrible situation for you to have gone through. Well done for trying though.

Without trying to sound too touchy-feely, is there someone around for you to talk things through if you need to? I would imagine it will take a while for what happened to sink in and the last thing you want is to have guilty feelings.

What did you wedge in his teeth, and what the hell would you do with a hose pipe...?

Got a horrible feeling he was going to attempt to create a new airway. It's not as easy as they make out in the films...

It sounds a bit gross, but it was a used stick from a Magnum! All that was to hand, I was shouting for mate's missus to get a spoon or something, but she was in bits..!
His jaw was totally solid. Hose was just an idea to get an airway that I thought of later. At the time, all I could think of was a Bic pen barrel.

As for the is there someone about tonight, weirdly enough, no. Missus has one of only about 5 nights away from home each year today! My 2 year old was up til 10 though, so a distraction.

Felt so helpless with hindsight. If he had not have been so big, not fallen in the bushes, maybe it would be different? But for all I know, he may have had a massive coronary..?

Cops reckoned they knew him and he lived with his sister and an Aunt (?) . At least no kids are without a Dad now, so maybe that's something??

Sounds like a heart attack.

You'd be surprised how quickly the blood in the body goes to the lowest points when the heart stops. Bruising on the skin being the indication of this.

A pen or hose wouldnt have made any difference mate - don't beat yourself up about that.

You did what you could - that's all anyone can expect.

As they say, you did the best you could. Odds are stacked against you; obese people are hard enough to work with when you're trained, I've been told... (whether it's saving their life, operating on them or helping them give birth).

He was pretty embarrased by his mistake, but we had a bit of a chuckle about it! I said, "flipping heck, Brown's cut backs hitting already are they!!?"

One quite sad thing that I remebered wss that he fell in a load of dogst too. Made working on him not too pleasant, and not the nicest place to end your days.
It's a common dog walking area of course, and shows hwo selfish these tts with dogs and no poo bags are. Whilst the Ambulance was there, some Council scum comes past with an Alsatian, that had a big blue bag on its tail (presumably some anti chew device or something). Cops a sqaut on my mates grass and woman says, oh no, er sorry have you got a bag I can borrow. I said, no, there's one on his tail though......

So she had to untape it and pick up this horrendous st in this riped and holed bag.....as she huffed and waled off, I said, perhaps it will make you remember next time...? Dog was 13 years old BTW (she told me) so I suspect there is 13 years of this dog's turds down this lane.......

My mate reckons he is going to put a sign up saying a guy died here, in some dog st to see if it shames people into picking up after them, but i very much doubt it will......

I always thought having a heart attack whilst running wouldn't be too bad a way to go. All the endorphins in the blood could take a lot of the pain and stress away smile.
