Been doing it for years now and it's just become a habit, dont even know im doing it sometimes.

More specifically the skin around my nails though. So, does anybody else do this and does anyone know any 'remedies' or tips on how to stop doing it?

Yep, done it for years. Bought that 'orrible nail varnish you can get, but after a while quite enjoyed it! Plasters are the only real option.....but then this makes you like like you're serial wnaker!

I used to, mostly without realising it. Then one day I just stopped. No idea why.

Have done for years and can't seam to stop. Did try to stop earlier this year by letting one nail grow at a time. By the time i had 5 or 6 good nails i got so pissed of snagging and scratching things by not keeping them trim properly i bit them off.

I never seem to bite my nails, it's always the skin around the outside for some reason.

Poofinger.

I don't bite my nails out of habit, but I do to keep them short. Should use scissors/clippers, but I don't get on with them. Should stop though. one tooth is a little worn now.

I used to do it to the point of not being able to eat salty crisps etc.

My plan of action was to give myself the thumb nails, but couldn't touch the rest. was on the thumbs for 2 weeks and then said no to them too. Worked fine.

I do it too, sometimes i think I do it when I'm nervous but other times I think I just do it by habit while I'm at work without realising. Is it just a willpower thing to stop?

I do, out of trimming rather than nervousness, and only do it when needed.
I have seen plenty of people who do it all the time, and they are left with these bloody flaky stumps hurl

Used to then just stopped.

My 7 year old does, but so does her mum so..

I was with my bro on Sunday and he was biting away on his fingers in the drivers seat then looked in his rear view mirror and said to his son "Stop biting your nails!" :Hehe:

Nob head!

(don't tell him I said that)

I've been at it since my early teens and it's a habit I deplore. It's so difficult to stop.

I should not be doing it given that I dress well and groom myself very well. The gnawed nails are a let down.

Same here.Got it down to a fine art now and they don't look much different than they would using clippers etc.

I "did" bite my nails for 30 years. (skin too!)

I recently took up "wet-shaving" with a safety razor and badger brush. Once I got used to taking care of my facial appearance I started to care about other aspects of my image.

I, like you was unhappy about my fingernail scenario so decided to change. I did, (except currently three of my nails are bitten as mum starts chemo tomorrow and am a touch worried!) everytime I caught myself biting my nails I would be disappointed in me!

The biggest problem when you've bitten your nails for so long is the shape of your fingers. After relentlessly exposing the nail bed for years on end I have changed the point at which my nails become detached from the skin underneath, This in turn leads my nails to be excessively long when trying to grow a useful piece of nail beyond my fingertip. Which makes them weak and vulnerable.

My thoughts on this particular problem revolve around DIY surgery and superglue. I haven't tried either yet.

So my advice is to take up a new ritual that benefits your appearance. You may find the motivation to improve other areas in your life if you do!

I used to bite my nails all the time.
I had an operation to remove a tumor from my nasal cavity a few years ago, and since then, the thought of biting my nails is abhorrent to me, much the same as finger nails down a blackboard.
Due to the same op, I also find the idea of picking my nose bad too, I just cant do it.

Untidy nails or bitten skin is one of the most off-putting things in a man as far as I'm concerned.

Dilute some Tea Tree Oil and dip your fingers in it. You'll soon find something else to nibble on.
