I had a op just over 3 weeks ago, very similer to a hip op but was to remove a large bone growth from my hip

I'm getting on well and do have access to a auto car but it's my right leg so thats not much help

my leg movement is very good already as I've been keeping up with exercise and i've driven the manual car on private land a few days away and managed it very well

But my surgon told me no driving for up to 6 weeks and physio said I can't drive until I have no need for my crutches and can do a emergency stop. which I can.

So any idea of the legality of driving in my situation

Not sure of the legality but had the problem years ago. Had an auto car, but it was my right leg that was in a flex cast so I had to learn to drive with left foot. I had no idea how insensitive it was! Out into a car park for a while and then on some quiet roads, and I was fine. Drove that way for ten weeks.

On a slightly different note...

I often get asked about driving whilst in a cast/splint on the arm, whilst there is no direct law stopping you, car insurance can be invalidated. The best thing is to contact your insurance company and check with them

after a recent motorcycle accident, i was told that i could drive when i was able to get up/down stairs without using the bannister. Ultimately, unless your license is revoked, it is self assessed. However, any incident that occurs will instantly put the pressure on you if your driving with any disability however temporary.

good luck

Are you in any form of cast?

I am in a cast up to my knee so it's against the highway code to drive. No cast on either your leg or your arm is allowed.

Not sure of the law if you're not in a cast, but it would be a damn good thing for insurers to pounce on if, god forbid, you ended up in an accident.

i has this situation, i basically just explained my situation to insurance company and asked them what would make them happy to be covered again under my policy. their take was once my consultant said i was good to drive let them know and i'd be covered to drive again.

i'm still on my crutch and driving happily

if your surgeon/consultant said no driving for 6 weeks, even though you can it may well be tough till he says yes

i'm in no cast and can just about limp without using crutches but not recommended as i've been told not to put too much weight on my right leg

As said when I drove on private land I coudl do a emergerncy stop, and use all controls almost as if I was not on crutches

I didnt drive when I smashed my hip up, as it was on my right leg I felt i couldnt move it fast enough or put enough pressure on the brake. The consultant also told me no driving even once I could weight bear for 2weeks to let my muscle build up.

So I got chauffered round for 3 months which would of been fine if I could drink but I was on all sorts and was told to keep off the pop.

However Had it been my clutch leg I would of pushed to drive much sooner.

Ask for a confomation letter from him just to cover you
