Hi,
can anyone point me in the direction where I can find sme information on Amitriptyline. My GF was told by her now retired doctor to look it up as a migraine medication.

or alternatively does anyone know of any medication that she should look at or question her doctor about?

cheers
Rich

I use amitrytiwhatsit for my migraines. Seems to work ok but it doesn't work on my 3-day mega migraines. People dont like using it because it is used for an anti-depressant and don't like the connotations attached to that. Not that it seems to be working for that at the moment either.

Oh and it knocks you out.

The people to see/speak to are The City of London Migraine Clinic. Its a national charity and the doctors there do the research, train doctors/nurses and provide outpatient services. You can give them a call on 020 7251 3322.

Can she get the sumatripan on prescription? It's 2 tablets for £7, I suspect you get a lot more for a prescription dose

diclofenac is usually only effective in migraines caused by muscular issues........generally considered to be outdated as a migraine medication.

If a triptan doesnt work (has she tried any of the others? rizatriptan is supposed to be the most effective) there are other options.

This is a helpful site

I take 20Mg Amitriptyline nightly, as I have Chiari 1 Malformation.

It is only used as an Anti-depressant in larger doses, 70-150Mg. Anything under 40Mg can be used as a sleeping aid for insomnia, and is also used for migraine and pain relief for neurological conditions.

Dont worry about the the anti-depressant links, wont mean anything in the amounts she will take it. It is not an over the counter drug though - so she will need a prescription from a good GP

My experience? Well, for me it works very well indeed. I suffered a lot from the symptoms of my condition - which include migraine. It took 3 weeks or so to really kick in, and I did feel like st for a 5 days or so - but once through this I am appreciating the benefits! So - I would recommend. I was put on these by my Neurologist - my GP was "unsure" if they were used for such things......

Side effects - Occasional blurry vision, but I am used to this as is a symptom of my condition, and this may be my condition rather than the drug! The worst one - is constipation. My digestive system was like a BMW before started on these drugs - its now like a Mk1 Astra

I also now sleep 8 hours solid a night, something I have not done in 10 years biggrin
