Hello,

I am new to PH, but have read many good posts over the years. smile

I am in a situation where I have realised that having a vasectomy many years ago with a first wife was a big mistake. frown

Now I am looking at a reversal.

If any one has some valuable information, and real life experiences they could share, i would be very grateful.

I have 3 kids with the first wife, from which I am divorced many years.
I have met another woman, with serious marriage prospects, but I had to be honest with her, as we are looking at our chances of children.

She is a few years younger than me also very fit and healthy, so I would expect her to be very fertile, which could in some way make up for my probable lower sperm count, if and when the stuff arrives !

I had the snip 20 years ago, after our last child, and am worried that the reversal might not go too well.

I have heard and read that the longer the time in years between getting it done, to getting it fixed again, reduces the chances of good sperm.

What other ways are there to father children, if the tubes don't join back together ?

My friend had a reversal after he got married to a much younger lady. He thought he'd be with his (in hind sight) psycho ex forever and didn't (in hind sight, probably her decision) want any kids because she had a son.

He is since the father of little girl.

Sorry I don't know how long he waited before the reversal but I seem to recall that the chances of the operation being successful were 50/50.

Good luck and welcome to PH's.

I wouldn't bother. If you're only shagging yourself, a vasectomy reversal won't make any difference. wink

Useful article with success rates can be found here. Surprisingly good figures, and there are techniques available for sperm harvesting and concentration even if the vasectomy reversal doesn't work. Some are rather eye-watering though!

Hi Nubin,
Eye watering doesn't bother me, I wouldn't give it a second thought.
The end result of being a father again, by either reversal, or harvesting and concentration, is the ultimate goal.
I don't imagine a needle in the balls is going to be any thing but unpleasent, and will probably have black and blue bruised balls for a few weeks, but if the end result is there, then that could be the 'back-up' plan.

I think it is 21 years since I foolishly, looking back, went for the snip.
I am worried it is too long.
I thought it was right at the time, but how can we look so far into the future, with divorce rates as they are.
I am reasonably fit for my age, and a healthy, non smoker, non drinker.
I do the Tie Jie Chinese exercise routine for 1,5 hours every day, 7 days before work.

My humble advice to any man, is don't do it under any circumstances.
The snip took just a few minutes under local, and rather definite, (not 100% though) but I fear the reversal will take more time and skill from the doctor.
It will be significantly less than 100% reliable to sew the Vas back together again.

Then there is the talk about 'scar tissue' which can block the Vas I don't fully understand yet, so more answers, and possibly links to sites chaps smile

Thanks Riddler,
I thought so, but wasn't sure smile

Well, why in the first place. . . . . .

Well we all like to think marriage is for keeps, but some times, it just doesn't work.
3 good kids, and 16 years down the line, and some thing changes your life. DIVORCE
After number 3 was born,21 years ago, we both thought that that was enough.
Man they were expensive then.
Her went on the pill, and we were OK for a few months.
Then came the suggestions that long term pill, wasn't good, as we know any way.
So the idea was there for me to go for the snip.
'Just a 5 minute operation' sure it is, with life changing after effects, as opposed to her having half the insides taken out.

It seemed right at the time, and I went like a lamb to the slaughter.

Sure the local GP had us both in on 2 occasions, some months apart, to talk to us, but like I said, we felt it was right 'AT THE TIME'

Then comes the big D, and you find yourself on your own, and to be honest, having the snip, even then seemed a good idea.
There was more woman than enough, and zero risk of any of them coming to me in 9 months for maintenance money.
Yea, life was good.
Plenty of new notches on the bed posts.

So fast forward several years, then, wham, bam, you get hit by that big bolt of lightening, and there she is in front of you, your possible new wife.
It is strange how you can play all the games with loads of women, and then just one woman can instantly change your life.
Is it us meeting a soul mate ? Is it her body movements, is it some sort of body smell,
How do we know, that after dating many women, this special woman comes around, and she brings 'nice stuff to the table' metaphorically speaking.
Like a whirlwind.
So then there is the usual light hearted chit chat about families, and then the babies thing is mentioned.
Sure I can afford to have another child, even another 3 or more.
I can keep her and the kids in nice environment, cared for, kids looked after, not really wanting for any thing.

So my friends, that is where we are now.

I think you just about summed it all up in one line there.

Hope the reversal goes well and good luck.

+1 for all three sentiments.
I went for the snip 24 years ago. I had a toddler and twins in the oven, so although in my early twenties the time seemed right. I was flat on my back with a very pretty young female doctor fiddling with my knackersack when she suddenly said "Oh Dear!" Turns out I had a "Blind Vas Deferens", or in other words the tube that delivers the swimmers to the starting gate wasn't complete, and there was NO chance that any of the kids was mine.

I was divorced soon after.

It's just so nerve racking at the moment,

So if the 'tubes can't be joined, frown then I need to start reading up on the other methods of my swimmers getting into, or at her eggs.

Just reading up about the 'harvesting'
Well I hope the damn anaesthetic works !

They actually remove a very small piece off one of your balls !
Then in the lab, remove the sperm from it.

That does sound like eye watering stuff.
