As some of you may know I had some issues with my last wisdom teeth extraction. I suffered a dry socket and although everything seems to be healing up well again, my back teeth on the lower jaw where I suffered the dry socket are incredibly sensitive cold water and also hurt if I use them to chew food.

Is this normal and will it go away over time?

What's even more bizarre is it's not the tooth next to the extracted wisdom tooth that's the problem. It the next one along! (Number 30 on the diagram).

I'm very cautious about going back to the same dentist after all the pain she caused me so I'd like to seek advice first.

If it's the sort of thing that goes away over time, I will just leave it and deal with the sensitive pain, however if it's damage, I'll be sure to make sure to seek independent advice on the matter.

There are usually 3 reasons for your sensitivity:

1) The gum has shrunk from around the tooth- this is quite common and happens to most people with age- it usually happens around the cheek side of the tooth. If you put something cold on it it hurts, then goes away quickly.

This is simple to sort- rub a bit of sensodyne into the tooth, leave overnight and after a few weeks the sensitivity will ease.

2) A hole- you may see a hole or shadow on the tooth (quite difficult to see back there though) The sensitivity may last a bit longer than the cold stimulus.

3) A cracked tooth- it will be sensitive to the cold and sore to bite on. Generally affects back teeth.

You really need professional diagnosis (an examination and x ray) This will determine the exact cause and don't worry as there are loads of solutions to the problem.

Leaving it won't do you any favours as if it is 2 or 3 then it will only get worse. If you don't trust your dentist ask a friend for a recommendation of another, go along and get an examination and see if you like that person. I think that a dentist is a bit more personal than a doctor or optician. Find one you like and stay with them!
