I just wondered if anyone could tell me is there much difference between the expensive whey proteins such as maximuscle etc, and cheaper ones like bodyfortress(half the price!)from holland and barrett?
thanks. smile

First thing that pops into mind is taste. That Body Fortress stuff is vile, while the rather more expensive BSN Syntha 6 tastes too divine to be considered a "fitness supplement". Others in between vary in cost and taste, unfortunately you just have to take a gamble and find one you like at a price you like.

Beyond that very shallow distinction, the type of protein (Isolate etc) does make a difference both to the quality and price. The amount of protein per serving is also key.

I really believe you get what you pay for. i'm big fan of CNP protein drinks and i've heard good stuff about Reflex protein and My Protein.

Take a good quick release protein that is quickly absorbed after a workout i.e. Pro recover from CNP and before you go to bed maybe a slower release protein.

Stick my the stuff from myprotein.

Its been shown to be the same quality as the big brands, ive not bothered with it for a while now, so i`m unsure if another bulk supplier is cheaper.

Generally what you paying more for, is taste, and mixability, neither of which bothered me. It tastes good with milkshake powder.

I bought the "flavourless" Impact Whey protein from Myprotein.

Except it is not flavourless. It has a hideous industrial after-taste that all the bananas, cinnamon and other flavours I add to the blender can't get rid of!

Are the flavoured ones better? Vanilla?

It may also be a false economy, check how many servings you get per tub. You need at least 28g of protein after you train so see how many 'scoops' will meet that criteria.

Holland and Barrett are always trying these tricks, they price a tub of protein/suppliment powder at £25 for a few weeks so people get used to the price and then halve the price so it looks more appealing, when really the protein/suppliment powder is not worth more than a tenner a tub anyway.

H&B stuff is fine if you are just staring out in the gym and want something to keep your calorie intake topped up but you soon get bored of it.

I have used Maximuscle Cyclone and Progain (and the extreme version aswell), I am currently using PHD Synergy, these are very good 'all in ones' as they contain everything you need to progress in the gym.

PHD taste much better that Muaximuscle I think.

i agree with some of the posters on here, you definatly get what you pay for.

its all well and good getting a cheap one with a dodgy taste, but when your on third of the day and your tired and grumpy, there is nothing worse.

I find Garnell do some good ones and good prices aswell. mint choc chip is a personal favourite!

Exactly 28g?

I think you'll find it depends upon body mass rather than a blanket amount of 28g.

HTH.

Regarding the original poster's question, Reflex are a good UK company and Optimum Nutrition come highly recommended for taste.

No you are right. I was recalling what my shakes has per scoop, of which I take two. So I take 56 after a work out.

IIRC you require 2x body weight in KG = amount of protein per day in g. so 80KG man will require 160g of protein.

bsn ones taste the best followed by muscle milk....

unflavoured is just hassle because it tastes like crap unflavoured and you have to go through the trouble of flavouring it, coupled with that fact your spending a few quid, you need to want to take this every day so may as well buy a nice one....

Yes, thats a pretty good way to work out your ideal protein intake.

Im using the unflavoured whey from myprotein at the moment, £30 for 4.5kg's of the stuff! Each 25g of powder contains 20g of protein, so its pretty good in that respect, but hardly has any calories compared to the bulking powders.

On its own in water it tastes like skimmed milk, I tend to mix it with oats, nesquik and a 50/50 mix of milk/water, tastes just like a chocolatey oatey milkshake.

Vanilla is very good tasting actually. Apparently one of the chocolate ones is better, but I have not tried that.

I use vanilla because you can mix different flavoured nesquick in with it if you fancy a change.

HTH smile

Price wise and for what you get, you can't beat Myprotein... IMO.

Wow - that's loads of protein in a day isn't it? Must be three or four shakes a day?

You can only absorb so much protein in one sitting so too much simply is wasted and expelled.

I'd be wary of taking in too much protein in one shot. As someone else posted your body can only process so much protein at one time. For me, it's about 35g, so I never have a more concentrated protein shake than that.
