Ph i need some advice. After having the NHS botch my knee op (now waiting for a 2nd one), and having so many resulting problems, ive decided im going to go private.
The main reason being i play alot of sports and im sick of waiting for NHS appointments and spending alot of money on seeing a physio privately.

So can anyone suggest a good provider? Im waiting for Bupa to call me back with a quote but so far AXA and Standard life are quoting me £38-£42 per month for comprehensive cover which i dont think is to bad at all.

Having never had cover before, if you injure yourself and require an op, do these companies allow you to choose a surgeon? or is it a case of you have whats offered and thats that?
After having one failed op i would hate to go down the same road again by having a surgeon who wasnt completely upto scratch!

Thank you in advance!

Mate of mine sells PMI, all the big providers - if you want his number, PM me.

Private health insurance won't cover your knee at all, will it?

Some have exclusions, im not worried about the knee now, im now seeing one of the best knee surgeons in the uk so i know he'll get it right this time!! Im thinking of in the future as i seem to be becoming very injury prone as of late!

Finding the right medical insurance policy for the right price can be a nightmare. Firstly none of them will cover any existing medical condition without severely loading the policy, so if you know you need another op they may not even cover it. Most of them will allow you to choose your own surgeon, but some have limitations as to where you can go for treatment. BUPA are the most expensive but offer the most comprehensive service. Cheaper options include things like Aviva's trust care 6 policy which basically means that if the NHS can treat you within 6 weeks then you have to use them if they cant treat you within 6 weeks (they have a schedule to check you dont actually have to wait 6 weeks) then you can go private immediately at selected places. You dont have to wait 6 weeks to see the consultant though that happens as soon as you can arrange an appointment with him privately and is covered. Depending on your age the cover could be as low as £17 p/month.

I got my wife put on my company healthcare scheme, you can't make any claims for ongoing medical issues until you have been in the scheme for 2 years I think. I'd be supprised if you could join a health scheme and make an imediate claim for an ongoing condition

Im with Cigna and have had no troubles, but then i have no experience of other providers either.

They wont take you or will put up the cost if your bringing an existing injury with you....

We have AXA in work, and that includes injuries or ailments previous to joining... Perhaps they may be a few that are not covered though!
