I need some advice on how to cease this embarrassing, if mildly amusing, dysfunction that I suffer from.

I pass wind regularly, sometimes I just can't contain it and let rip wherever I may be. This could be in a meeting, a lift, a bar, a car, in fact anywhere.

Now, while this may seem okay, as we all do it, my flatulence in particular is pretty terrible.
Not only does it sound like amplified thunder, but the smell is horrendous, and needless to say, is very embarrassing in certain situations. I mean, I've cleared a few rooms before now.

I eat well, 3 meals a day with no snacking, keep fit, and only drink alchohol at the weekend. So why oh why this flatulence? I'm beginning to think it may be hereditary, as my old man used to let rip in legendary fashion when I was younger, so maybe.

So, can anyone relate? Or give me some advice as to why, or how to stop, this evil menace.

Not a veggie, are you? They seem to be the most prolific farters.

No, not a veggie. I have worked with a few in the past and your right, they're pretty good at passing vile wind. I do eat a fair bit of meat during a week though scratchchin

As for the cork, would you do it? hehe

Likely possibilities:

-the food you eat
-bowel problems eg IBS
-you don't go to the toilet as much as your body needs

I would think the last two especially

Maybe you have some form of intolerance to certain foods which is causing a mild stomach upset resulting in heavy wind?

Me? I fart regular and without sounding like a child, I love it!

It's a poor arse that can't rejoice as my mother says rofl

hehe I take a dump regularly, maybe 3 times a day, like clockwork.
Sometimes its worse after I visit the loo.

I usually have bran flakes with whole milk for breakfast, anything on toast for lunch ie. beans, ravioli, ham and cheese, even a seafood based dish if i'm flush. And a filling dinner like bangers and mash, spaghetti bolognese etc. So not too bad I think.

I love passing wind, but when it clears the room its rather embarrassing. A colleague described it as 'smells like raw sewage', Oh the shame...

I get the poops all the time, it is definitely hereditry as both my mother and father a prolific guffers.

As my sister says, "We come from a very gaseous family...", personally I always find a good trouser rumbler very satisfying. I've also been known to clear the office, and I also have no shame.

I say 'let rip' and stuff the consequences!

Seriously, though, cut out the bran flakes for a week and the next week cut out the beans. Bran flakes can cause problems for some people. As for beans... you were a schoolboy once, so you know the score.

PS Visiting the toilet 3 times a day? I know others say they have this frequency but I thought once or twice a day was healthy and anything less or more could be a problem (not alarmingly, I mean in terms of diet).

Cheers for that. I do like my food, I probably have larger portions than the regular guy. I think I'll change my diet for the next month, but I am lacking in imagination for my 3 meals a day. I think i'm set in my ways a little, I am pretty comfortable with my current rota I must admit.

I know its like asking mummy, but what would you recommend for a regular weeks diet?

Sorry, I'm not a nutritionist or a dietician. Why not try couscous (if you want to be mega-healthy) or other Italian pasta dishes if you like spaghetti. Or something completely vegetarian with lots of fresh, raw vegetables. I hate using recipe books; there are no rules beyond what can make you ill (ie you can't eat a raw chicken; chewing frozen vegetables will result in big dental bills etc hehe ) so use your imagination and try new things at the supermarket. Loiter in the asian cuisine section, for instance. Or the wholefoods section. Or simply check out different vegetables in that section.

I'd agree with cutting those out of your diet. Too much fibre in my diet has similar effects (as I have IBS). There may be something with the dairy products too, but I'm not entirely sure on that. Did I hear correctly that it takes upto 2 weeks to 'flush' the dairy products out of your system? Could try losing the whole milk and cheese for a couple of weeks.

Good luck!

I too would start here. Despite the advertising, your body can get plenty of fibre from vegetables. There is no real need to eat the dietary equivalent of brillo pads, and they can disagree with you.

I'd suggest cutting out milk for a bit. I'm lactose intolerant, and before I found out I had a similar gaseous problem. As soon as I cut out milk (actually, changed to Lactofree), the problem went away. Worth a go.

I know a few people with this issue and this was exactly the cause (milk, or milk containing products, which is LOTS of stuff). Try cutting out dairy totally and see how you go.

As other have said, 3 times sounds a lot. I eat quite a lot and feel food goes straight through me but I usually only take a dump once per day.

Someone I know who takes diet very seriously told me that we were never meant to eat diary products or wheat (no idea if this is true or not) but as a result a lot of people have some level on intolerance to one or the other, or even both. Pasta is made from wheat of course.

Sounds like intolerance to certain foods to me.
I know the feeling, I can have a decently hot curry and not really suffer but if I have a dogburger with a bit of onion (or a bacon & sausage butty) I fart & crap like I've eaten a Phaal.

It sounds to me like you need to cut out x or y and see if you still have windy pops. Or move to Japan (am, I dreaming or do they happily trump with abandon in public???).

Certain foods turn me into a wind machine.....try avoiding the following:

- Peppers (uncooked are worse).
- Onions.
- Chilli but specifically things like tabasco sauce.
- Dairy products. Use lactose free alternatives.
- Beer. Try drinking wheat beer instead.

It takes time to get all this out the system but it works for me. Unfortunately it's tough to cook without onions so you tend to find this a problem, plus I love spicy foods so that's a problem too!!!
