Gilbert's Syndrome
Discussion
ta. husband has been diagnosed with it and whilst it appears the most people seem to have no symptoms and carry on life as normal etc he has recently had an episode which made him feel fairly ill (various symptoms i know!)
Just wondered if some people had occasions where they felt the effects for a period of time and then got over it and felt fine for ages etc.
From what i understand periods of illness particulay viral and stress can raise the billirubin levals and produce symptoms.
Just looking for others experiances of it really.

As far as I'm aware GS doesn't tend to have a great deal of bearing on one's life. Apart from the jaundice, if I remember rightly the only significant practical issues are a decreased likelihood of Cardiac disease (which is handy) and an increased likelihood of Paracetamol toxicity (not so handy). Can't remember much else of significance about it really....
ETA I think there have been anecdotal reports of fatigue and general malaise in common with what you've described. Also try this for reference; http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/176822-overv...

Hi,
I was diagnosed with GS at the age of 19 - now 36.
As already stated, most people don't suffer any ill effects.
I was originally diagnosed after becoming jandiced following 2 weeks of feeling sick/vomiting, stomach pain and general fatigue. Imagine the worst hangover you have ever had x 10.
Admitting doctor originally thought I had liver failiure. After several tests it was discovered that my bilirubin level was around 3 times the norm. After a weeks stay in hospital and losing a lot of weight, I made a full recovery.
Since then I've not experienced an episode of that magnitude. Ocassionally I can suffer from increased bile (nice) but apart from that it doesn't affect everyday life. Feeling rundown and overtired seems to trigger it.
As its a hereditary disease, one of your parents also has it!

Yes, I have it. I was diagnosed about three years ago. I'm a 38 year old female. I remeber the GP telling me it shouldnt affect my life in any way except that if I had surgery I needed to make sure the hospital knew I had Gilbert's because I would be jaundiced after any op.
I have a feeling that it effects the level of alcohol one can consume and hangover effects. I only have to have one glass of wine and i'm well on my way, and if I drink more than usual (anything over 2 glasses wine!) I feel terrible the day after.
Some people say it makes them very prone to fatigue but I'm always knackered anyway so who knows!

Ahh so its Gilbert's not just the fact she's a lightweight. Good to know.Another with GS here!
It was discovered when I was about 13 and I never really paid much attention as I had much bigger medical problems at the time.
All I've ever noticed is that I turn a little bit yellow (particularlly my eyes) if I skip meals. Definitely hasn't affected my ability to drink alcohol or recover the day after.

Discovered I had it when I was about 18 when I gave blood for the first time. Scared the st out of me when the contacted me for further tests ! Can't say that I've noticed any problems with my health over the years and can still give blood.
Wish it had a more macho sounding name though
