Hi all

I broke my medial malleolus last saturday and have been in a cast since. The first few days were ok, just kept my leg as elevated as much as possible bar going to the toilet etc. In the last few days when I get up to go to the toilet or get a drink I get an unbearable pain in my ankle - like a pressure against the cast. Is this normal?

I'm on crutches and dont put my foot on the ground at all.

Thanks

LMC

Is it a circumferential full cast ie all the way around, or is it still a backslab ie only about 3/4 of the way around with a soft bit going up the front of the foot and shin ?

that's quite strange it should be all around because pain is by sensory input from nerves...it's done by segmental levels of the spinal cord, hence you can get referred pain (sciatica is a prime example), all the way, anterior and posterior, up to the knee is quite strange. if it keeps happening, get it checked out.

this stuff is my job.

Go back to fracture clinic if you are having problems with your cast.

Thanks guys.

Went back to the clinic today, the pain is coming from spending a while with my leg elevated then standing up. The blood rushes to the foot causing the pressure pain. Got some x-rays and he seems to think everything is going well.
