Protein Drinks: A Comparison
Discussion
Following on from this thread about Protein drinks, where several people made several suggestions as to their preference, I thought I'd look into it a bit more as it's all pretty confusing. Disclaimers:
1. I can't guarantee accuracy of the figures - just used what I've found online
2. Doesn't take into account taste or quality of the ingredients
3. Prices are best I could find online at various retailers (myprotein.co.uk, Supplement King, Monster Supplements, Affordable Supplements, Supplement Centre, Muscle Shop etc - Google is your friend)
4. I have taken the maximum recommended servings in each case (that is, where it says take 1-3 servings per day, I have assumed 3)
I think the key measure is "cost per gram of protein per day", so this is what I've ordered the results by - most expensive at the top to cheapest at the bottom.

Good work!! Thats a very useful list, USN Pure Protein does really well for protein amounts, as well as low carbs and fats, got a few cals in there but I need that anyway.
Makes me think how much I spend a day, two USN PP shakes and one Muscle Fuel anabolic shake, gets bloody expensive!! Still, imagine how much chicken, eggs etc you'd need to eat to get that much protein (130 grams from three shakes), plus the additional fats etc you'd get from them, much healthier and convenient way to get protein from shakes, and ultimately more cost effective then tons of chicken or steak.
Edit: sites like thesupplementstore.co.uk and many others give discounts for bulk buying, and also points per order which add up to pounds off consequent orders, you can save a good deal of money this way when you add it up monthly.

For how long it lasts, how many scoops per day are we talking?
Sorry, should have said. For how long it lasts, how many scoops per day are we talking?
I've just taken the tub size (eg 2kg) and the recommended max daily servings (eg 4 servings of 25g = 100g per day) - therefore a tub would last 20 days.
Interesting, so you could pretty much half the dose of GRS-5 then I suppose assuming your pretty light and get a reasonably protein intake in your normal diet. That could be a big inflencing factor as it gets tedious re buying tubs.
I gave promax a go and didnt notice much. I am on a tub of cyclone at the moment and I dont know its its phsycosomatic or the creatine doing what its supposed to but I seem to have accelerated off in terms of what I can lift. This sheet looks like a good arguement for spliting the protein and creatine intakes up unless creatine is very expensive by itself.

Myprotein's unlfavoured whey is great value at £31.75 for 4.54kg.
Per 30g the stats are:
Energy 118.0cal
Energy 497.0kJ
Protein (dry basis) 24.6g
Protein (as-is) 23.6g
Fat 2.1g
Carbohydrates 1.8g
They recommend one serving 3 times a day, so 90g per day gives you:
354cal
1491kj
73.8g Protein
6.3g fat
5.4g carbs
A tub will last 50 days at this intake and costs just 63p per day or 0.84p per gram of protein.
The only downside is lack of carbs, but I add oats to make up for this, about £1 for 2kg's from Morrisons.

That'll be the creatine, are you taking it post workout only or as a pre workout shake as well?I gave promax a go and didnt notice much. If post only, try taking one scoop with a small amount of water about 45 mins before you work out, then your usual dose post workout. make sure you're eating well, and you'll notice an even better improvement.
Saying that USN Muscle Fuel Anabolic is on special at thesupplementstore currently and it is a superb all in one with an excellent creatine stack, works out significantly cheaper than Cyclone and Ive used both extensively and prefer the MFA.
Its worth trying a variety as they all offer more or less the same thing, some just seem to work better than others.
Got myself a tub of Sci-MX GRS-5 mint choc a couple of days ago as I heard it's tasty.
Not bad whizzed up with a banana and half water/half skimmed milk after a workout.
One problem though.
The guffs.
Oh my god, the guffs.
Now I'm not particularly squeamish, but this is family-of-dead-rats-up-the-bum bad farting.
Be warned.

I have switched to PHd over maximusle now after daggerpie's reccomendation in the original thread. Its a much nicer taste than the cyclone. Phd reccomend in the directions its used pre and post workout which corroborates your reccomendation. I think I'll start doing that as I can see it makes sence to be well loaded up when your working out.
You haven't looked at Nutrisport 90+
http://www.bodybuildingwarehouse.co.uk/nutrisport-...
When you factor in delivery costs, it crushes everything else in terms of pence per gram of protein.
The Chocolate's the best flavour to go for - not a fan of vanilla lol!

Just to add, the Maximuscle products are almost Lactose free, and have no egg proteins in them.
Are all these products 100% pure whey protein (at least the protein part, not the fillers etc) or do some contain a certain amount of calcium caseinate which is supposedly a "lower quality" protein and less easily absorbed? It would be nice to know how many grams of protein there are per hundred grams of powder.

anyone used this stuff?

It's what I'm currently using as recommended by my trainer, 85g of protein per 100g.

People shouldn't go overboard with guzzling as much protein as possible, your body can only process a certain amount in one go the rest gets wasted.
If it we're me i'd buy a decent protein isolate (fast absorbing)such as CN pro recover to be taken straight after a workout then maybe a cheaper slower acting protein say from My protein that you can take throughtout the day and before bedtime.
