Muffled Hearing + Ringing in Right Ear; how to make it stop?
Discussion
So, I woke up the other day, felt like my ears were blocked, almost as if they have "popped" like being on a plane. Usually I give them a quick clean and it goes away, but for some reason it didn't this time. I carried on as normal, and it hasn't really changed; it still feels like I've been on a plane. I've given them a more thorough clean, and the left ear is fine now, however the right ear has got worse, there's a ringing sound I can permanently hear, like the sound you get when you've just got out of a nightclub and you're still "buzzing". It's been like this for a couple of days. Anyone know what's going on? Should I go to see a doctor, or is there something so simple that even someone like me could do to fix it?

The damage was done back then I'm afraid.
Hearing loss is gradual and permanant!
I have beeen doing all the bad things for years!
Watching motor racing at the track.
Shooting
Riding Motorcycles.
Driving noisy cars with the windows open! I used to wear ear plugs in my Scooby!
It could be a virus of the inner ear, but they can't treat that anyway and once you have it, it never really goes away! Doc told me that!
I had it years ago and had to lay in bed for a week due to the Vertigo!
All the Doc could do was a little white pill to stop be being sick!
You need to stop exposing your ears to loud noises to protect what you have left!
The Ipod will be blamed in years to come!
I wonder who sues them first for not having a built in limiter??
Go see your Doc and ask for a hearing test. You need to get a level of hearing done now so it can be monitored in future.
Sudden loss of hearing in one ear needs to be investigated, so get to the Doc as soon as possible!

Pete Townshend, although probably not a PHer, has tinnitus, apparantly caused after The Who trashed the stage. Video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xZOrWK6d4gGo on then, Who else is on the Tinnitus list.

It's almost a claim to fame; Pete has it, so do I
Tinnitus - Love it. Not.
I have it permanently now from when I got a serious ear infection - which was fun as I had no balance, no depth perception and couldn't walk properly for about a week. (No comments please )
I've been to an ear specialist who, after some tests, told me - "Yes, you have tinnitus" - thanks.
There is no known cure, but he did offer me an option - There's a "hearing aid" that you can get which plays white noise in your ear (but must be worn for all waking hours). You wear it for a few months and it "tunes" the brain to suppress the ringing in your ears. I declined as I, then, was extra-vain - still wouldn't have it now as it's usually bearable.
The nights, however, are not fun as if you can't sleep all you hear is the tinny ringing which, it seems, gets louder then longer you're awake.
If you're in a dead silent room, with no background noise and all you can hear is the tinnitus - it will get louder and louder and louder until all you want to do is rip your own brain out to MAKE IT STOP!

Try reading a fiction novel to get your brain thinking about something that is totally different from your normal world.
As you drift off to sleep, your thinking about the plot of the book and can tune out the ringing.
I have suffered it in my left ear for years and trained myself to ignor it, but recently taken up reading cheap paperbacks and find this helps me as described above.
I too had that ear virus with the balance problem - people just can't get how bad it was!
Still have to be careful about balance in the shower where eyes shut balance is something we all take for granted.

Hello.Doesn't sound too bad. From your description sounds like middle ear problem rather than inner ear ie possible eustachean tube dysfunction.Have you had a blocked nose due to a cold or hay fever etc.Possible may be outer ear issue eg wax adherent to drum.Get someone to have a look down.
ps I too have tinnitus like Pete and due to noise induced loss (rock and roll!)
Best wishes.

Thanks for your help. Yeah I always seemed to have a blocked nose since I was about 12, will go down the doc's soon. It's been weird the last few days, starting to feel like I'm on a plane and my ear is popping, when I yawn it seems fine, but if I yawn again it goes back to normal.ps I too have tinnitus like Pete and due to noise induced loss (rock and roll!)

Oh yeah, gotta love The Who , been listening to Quadrophenia quite loud in the Panda lately as well, with windows down.

Inner ear infection, causes a loss of hearing, exaggerating the ever present tinnitus we all have, as you can hear it clearer. Go see the doc, get some antibiotics, the infection will go away, but slowly.Scraggles said:
with all the kids playing their mp3 players on max volume, suspect will be a lot more tinnitus sufferers in due course
I gave a guy on my ship a bking over that the other days, as I could hear his earphones and I was in another room!!!! He had no idea it was bad for his ears.Mind you, Black Sabbath and Status Quo concerts did my ears no favour in the mid seventies......
Quick update; my hearing isn't muffled any more, but I can hear the tinnitus slightly more in the right ear. I've had it as long as I can remember in both ears, but since my hearing went dodgy in the right ear its more hearable in that side, but of course when there is other background noise its not as hearable.
