Marital arts man, some advice please :)
Discussion
Can you (or any other PHers) advise on which me on which Martial Art (MA) to pursue based on the below criteria please. I shall be returning to uni to study for a masters (after working for two years) so I will have extra time on my hands.
The Uni offers all kinds of MA etc so I am sure I can have every base covered.
I wish to maximise my potential for fitness, and explosive power to supplement playing rugby and maybe to some extent reduce the chance of injury.
I have no previous MA experience, however I have been training at a gym and playing rugby for circa 5 years.
Thanks in advance for your time.

I think what you mean is martial arts. Not marital arts, whic i'm sure can be equally as dangerous but isn't going to help with the rugby.
I'd suggest that you don't sound like you're interested in learning the ins and outs of heavy techncial form so I'd suggest either Kickboxing or Boxing. These will help with excercise as much as learning to fight. Alternativly, Judo and BJJ will be good to show you how to deal with moving other people's weight etc... but more technical and involve a lot of ground work.
Try a few classes and see what you enjoy.

Boxing or thai boxing - no complicated techniques to learn, at least not initially, and in the right club lots of explosive training - the nature of a fight/sparring round lends itself to this - i.e a round is 3 minutes at a certain level of intensity punctuated by short periods of maximum intensity.
I was the fittest I've ever been when I was thai boxing. Roadcraft helped general fitness but there was so much interval training too.

Hiya!
Sorry, only just noticed the post.
Where to start.....
Well, as a gym head and rugby player myself, I know where you are coming from.
As I have said many times before here, really it is your instructor and how they teach that really matters; after all, at the end of the day there are only so many ways of punching and kicking (despite what all the martial arts "my style is better than yours" nazis will tell you).
Instructors are the difference between receiving or not a good martial education. Similarly to being at school, a syllabus isn't really enough to make an informed choice.
I don't want to get into a this style is better than that style debate.
Speaking from experience, I have found that Judo and Jitsu (trad or Braz.) relly do help with the physical side of rugby, the mauling, tackling and rucking.
I would suggest boxing as a compliment to these ground based styles; good upper body endurance and explosive power (great for the hand off).
Boxing will also prepare you to give, take and most importantly evade the sort of punches you will encounter on a rugby field.
If you tell me which Uni you are planning to attend, I will look up their clubs online and give you my feelings on them based on what I know and can find out. (I can find out anything about a martial art/artist).
Fire away with any more info/questions.
Oss.

Apologies for the confusion between marital and martial
I'm going back to Aberystwyth, however I can't find the club names on their guild web site. I remember them having a reasonable representation at the sports fair each year with Tae Kwon-Do, Karate, Judo, Ju-Jitsu AIFAK etc.
I'm not sure about boxing, and I didn't even think of it but I will look into it.
Thanks a lot for your help, I shall go away armed with some new info!

I just had a look at these:
The TKD will be crap, cause it always is.
The Boxercise is aimed at girls.
The Judo, judging from the facebook pics is full of girls again; can't see any rugby types (the ones you need to learn to throw).
Karate is KUGB so should be good; sadly it isn't really what you're looking for.
Surprised they don't have Muay Thai and K-Box clubs though; is it only a small uni?
Don't even consider aikido.
I did find this link though as there seems to be website.
