Is 160/80 a tad on the high side?

Not really. Though 160 is quite high, it depends what you were up to at the time. Anyway, the risks are more associated with the lower figure (diastolic) - above 90 will worry your GP, and over 100 they'll certainly be looking to analyze/medicate.

Do see your GP. But you're a long way from 'Panic Stations' there.

'Normal' for a resting adult is about (we all vary, and it changes during the day) 120/80. So, yes, the 160 seems high.

Go see your GP. He'll measure BP and pulse, and in all probability tell you not to worry. He might send you for a few tests as an out-patient in case this is a symptom of something else. They don't hurt, though it is all a bit tedious. But, you can laugh at the truly awful suits on NuLabour's unemployment-busting 'management staff'.

But, you aren't about to pop, by the sound of it.

roflComputer says no The system is down, they can't even book an appointment until next week, let alone tell me when the appointment might actually be.

I can see the nurse who can do some tests.

Hi OP,

Well, your second reading (of 80 - when the heart muscle is relaxing) seems good, but it is your systole which is a little bit raised.

You're not going to have any problems in the immediate future, so don't concern yourself.

However, do go and see your own Doctor. Treating hypertension is such a simple thing to do, and reduces risk factors for so many other diseases (diabetes, heart attack, stroke, you know them!) by huge amounts.

I would also take readings twice a day for 1 week, make a note of these, and take them to the Doctor with you. (S)He will, more than probably, give you some drugs to take or suggest some lifestyle changes.

Best of luck. smile

I quit smoking four weeks ago and I am still on the strongest 25mg patch. I was wondering if that could be an issue. I am just about to drop down to the 15mg patch.

Where is the best place to buy a blood presure tester? Is that the sort of thing a local chemist would stock or perhaps a big Boots.

Missus just got one from Boots, about £30, easy too use and pretty accurate.

Mine was 197/128, which worried my Doctor somewhat.
After a year of investigations and treatment it's come down to 145/85 and the Doc is happy with that level. No physical cause found.
Unfortunately I have to take four tablets a day for the rest of my life.

I was seen by a local nurse the other day who measured me at 130/90 and 120/90. The 10 difference is between a digital machine and the old fashioned way.

So basically depending on who is testing me, on what machine and which way the wind is blowing, I have high and low blood pressure.

The irony is they think my high reading could be because I was anxious about having a blood test.

Pretty normal (the readings and the variations). "Worry Ye Not".

ETA- The '90' is higher than your Doctor will like, but it isn't that scary in itself. My guess is he'll ask for repeated readings to keep an eye on it.

I bought a testing machine and on average I am high 130's/low 140's over high 80's, but also hit lows of 120's over 70. Its almost like a like a game to see how high or low I can get it, so far had a 113/70 up to 149/99 hehe

I am dropping to a lower smoking patch soon and I have joined a gym so that should help screw the results up.
