PH Doctors - Tonsillitis
Discussion
Can anyone suggest anything else I can take apart from Ibruprofen and paracetamol (gargling with the soluble stuff as well as tablets - but no more than a total of 8 per 24 hrs) lots of fluids and ice cream?
I can't get to see my own GP but 2 pharmacists have said analgesic throat sprays and the above, and a doctor friend says the above too. Oh and its been confirmed as tonsillitis by 2 sisters a pain nurse and an ENT surgeon (then I got sent home)
I feel like ste, am really tired but just not being able to sleep (except for day one when I started going down with it and I slept from 11am to 6pm and then 10pm until the following morning) and really fed up now.
It all started on Tuesday.
I'm sat on MSN to a friend suffering with the same thing and we're at the end of our tethers

I am NOT a doctor.
But.....Gargle with Whiskey,(at night) or Sandersons throat specific,(during the day) as it hardens the throat.
HTH
ps. you feel like s***t because your infected throat is poisoning your whole system. That's what I believe anyway.

I have a bout of tonsilitis about once a year and have done since I was about 17.
My doctor told me that the tonsils do a good job of catching most infections, and that removing them would save me from the sore tonsils/throat, but would open me up to longer bouts of illness, so I've never had mine out.
Some years it is a bit of swelling and a bit of an ache which needs nothing, and other years it's difficult to eat or breath through my mouth.
I usually suck on plenty of throat lozenges - Dequacaine (Benzocaine, Dequalinium Chloride) is my prefered lozenge, but Strepsils/Strepfen and Boots own-brand will do in an emergency (Strepsils & Boots seem the same to me).
I've not tried the spray versions but if the active ingredients are similar then they should work as well.

Not a doctor, but I've been given medical sanction to mix Nurofen Plus (ibuprofen + codeine) and Co-dydramol (paracetamol + codeine) since ibuprofen and paracetamol are of different families - provided that doesn't involve more than the recommended dose of codeine or paracetamol.
Thanks for that - I have also been told I can have all three (not at the same time - take them 2 hrs apart) to keep the pain/fever/aches.... away and not have the ups and downs. It just isn't touching it at the moment though. God I feel sorry for myself.
According to a book I have, The Practical Home Doctor (published sometime in the 1930s) it says:
".....they (tonsils) should be painted regularly with a special throat paint of iodine and gycerine, called Mandl's paint after the long-dead French physician who discovered this healing and soothing preparation."
Later, regarding sore throats it says that they can be relieved by using a cold compress. Wrap a cold damp towel round your neck, then wrap a dry towel over that.

Sounds like I might stick to the whiskey suggestion.....".....they (tonsils) should be painted regularly with a special throat paint of iodine and gycerine, called Mandl's paint after the long-dead French physician who discovered this healing and soothing preparation."

just getting over it after a week. Gargle panadol express. Just put 1 tablet into water (you are supposed to take 2) which keeps the total number you are taking down so you can do it more often in 24 hrs*. Gargle for ages - make the glass last! Thats the only thing that touched mine - I think I've spent about £30 in boots on different things to test!
- this is my logic and may lead to death but it hasnt with me ye

Just waiting for the ibruprofen to kick in again...
Got any friends who have had bad backs/operations recently? They might have some prescription strength stuff lying around... Not that you should take this bad advice of course.
My wife's Codeine Phosphate that she didn't need after her caesarian was just, lovely. You might need to google 'recreational dose' but that's all part of the fun.
DISCLAIMER: Do not take other people's expired medicines. Its silly. And dangerous. -love from captainzep's lawyer.
