had my first nhs filling on outside edge of a molar so nearest the cheek

i tried to keep track of what was going on as you cant see , he drilled out the decay , applied something out of a syringe then smoothed in some filling , then thats it all done

i recall on my other privately done filling in spain they used the air drill thing to buff /polish the tooth , nhs guy didnt

now that side of the tooth feels rough like its dirty /sandpaper effect , should i go back and get it polished up ? guessing he etched the surface? i was thinking it might smooth over but its been 4 weeks now

I had a large filling a number of years ago and commented on the slightly rough finish as the dentist finished up. He was a little surprised, but was happy to smooth it over before I left.
They're made from pretty tough material so its unlikely to smooth out on it's own if it hasn't yet.

just to make it clear , it feels like that whole side of the tooth is rough not just a spec where the filler is

Sometimes it's hard to tell at the time due to anaesthetic. It's normal to go back and have some rough edges smoothed out - if you don't it may cut into your cheek or tongue.

What type of filing is it, amalgam or white composite? I didn't think they did composite fillings on the NHS.

Every time I have had a composite filing they have as you say smoothed it down at the end and made sure that my bite was correct.

Pretty standard in my experience. A filling never feels as smooth as a home grown tooth. If it's sharp though, defo worth a return visit where they get their Dremel out and smooth any spikes off.

its white and on the outside edge so no biting on it , just feels like sandpaper rather than spikes
