Having gone bald, I’ve taken solace in the whole ‘go bald, grow a beard’ to mitigate matters. However, a small bald patch about half the size of a 5p coin has appeared on my chin, effectively ruining the beard.

It’s been there about a month or two now with no signs of the hair growing back. There was no spot or any obvious cause.

What caused this? Will it grow back?

I've got alopecia.

It started exactly the same as that. A small smooth patch in my beard.

It's an autoimmune disease with no known cause or cure. Alot of people say stress although it has never been proved.

There are different types but sounds like allopecia areata.

I've lost all hair on my head, beard, hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, the lot.

There are things you can buy such as steroid creams etc, some people claim success, others say not.

Sorry to hear that. I’ve been doing a bit of googling and my issues seems to be Alopecia Barbae.

Think of the time and money saved by not needing to shave or have haircuts!

I had alopecia, started in my beard too, ended up with a few patches on the head that would occasionally fill in and move to a different place, definitely stress related for me, after removing the stress factor, all has returned and I have a beard and a full head of hair, although getting a bit of a swans nest starting at the crown :-(

If it does grow back, how long is it likely to be before that happens?

I think that it varies from person to person, mine gradually filled in over a period of about 2 years ,and no new patches have appeared for 4 years.

Wow that’s quite a while. Thanks though.
