My mum needs an upper set of dentures / implants

She's just seen the local place and they are saying it's £16k for just the upper set - apparently 4 implants and then the dentures are permanently fixed

She hasn't had the scans yet but they say bone grafts are likely to be required

Is that correct and the right ballpark ?

I'm aware people go abroad for these things - but she's loathe to do so

For comparison, I had 4 implants with 2 bridges about 17 years ago for around £8k iirc.

I was recently quoted £3k for a single tooth implant. I will be seeing a specialist soon whose website advertises £2800. I'm guessing it's the bone graft that's pushing the price in your Mum's case.

Following as I'm due two molars out I'm thinking of getting implants for. In my younger days I drunk too much squash so front teeth have started to demineralise so I'll want all those capped or potentially implanted too eventually

I believe the bone graft is only £500, I'm not sure what's involved as it's not your bone they graft

It seems it's to remove all the remaining teeth, fit 4 implants and all the teeth fit to them

I can't see how they justify £16k but I suppose helicopters don't pay for themselves

I'm 57. Have had bruxism ( teeth grinding ) from my mid 20's. Teeth went into total disrepair, falling out etc. Dentists did what they could , offered implants. Too expensive. In 2014 took the step and had all remaining teeth rmoved and a full set of upper and lower dentures fitted. Cost about 3k but I'm happy with them. I think dentists these days are more salesmen then dentists. Tooth whitening, oral hygeinist, root canal work etc. In the the end it's just a business.

I’m currently being quoted £3.5k for an implant…

As far as a bone graft is concerned, they go in your mouth and up the inside of your cheek, then cut through your bone with a grinding attachment in the dentist drill, and then insert ground bovine bone under your sinus sack to lift it higher, so that it’s not punctured by the fitting of the implant smile

Two colleagues have done the Turkey (the other one going to Croatia, think it was but don't quote me) combined family holiday and major teeth work routine.

Both it must be said very successful but also involved long days of intensive work, but both were seriously impressed with the facilities equipment skills and general care taken of them.
Both worked out around the £5k mark, i know the one who went to Turkey had been quoted around £25k here, the other chap had similar work so probably a similar UK quote.
I've only had two simple implants done, completed just days before national house arrest, confess that was more than enough oral invasion for me.

A mouthful of work could easily be £25k+ here.

It sounds horrendous but if your mouth is knackered for whatever reason , you`ll have to endure it and the savings abroad to be made cannot be ignored. All day in the chair with the local construction company setting up shop sounds particularly unpleasant. I hope the anaesthetic is good ???

I had two implants and significant bone grafts in 2005 and that ran to 5K then (lost a couple of front teeth in a fight, though that sounds much more macho that it actually was !)

I know someone whos implants at the same time didn't take so would suggest some sort of indemnity just in case.

It was a long operation. I know I had two main injections and two boosters to keep the area numb. No real pain afterwards though. Didnt bother with the pain killers they gave me and was fine to drive after a saunter round Kendal and a cup of tea smile

The sight of some one wielding a chisel in your mouth then catching a reflection of my gums opened up to take the bone chiselled from my jaw though was a sight I will remember for a long time.

If I had the loot I'd have implants if they were a possibility. I feel like I've a mouth full of broken glass at times, teeth all ground and broken. Sporting a full beard is a necessary vanity for me.

So did I and I documented my account on here. I did a lot of research and didn't focus on Turkey but considered other European destinations as well. The most engaging and comprehensive treatment plan along with sound recommendations led me to Turkey. The facililites and equipment were state of the art especially the X-Ray and 3D imaging for implant placement. And now over 3yrs on it is the best decision I made. For what I had done the UK price was c£22k. Over the period I've been 3 times, staying over a week each time in a decent hotel and with all travel costs, accommodation and treatment I'm circa £7.5k all in (which included a bone graft and sinus lift).

Off season you can get flights for less than £100rtn. Implants need 6-months minimum (at their insistence) to 'bed in' before going back for the abutment/crown. Looking at the place I went the cost shown for 'All-on-4' per jaw is £3k.

Turkey is hard to ignore.. the scare stories have put me off so far, but the state of our local service can’t be trusted much more. Dentists don’t seem to last over than a year here before I’m informed they’ve left and I’ve been allocated someone else.
I could do with a couple of molars and Turkeys probably going by to be the way forward.

I had ground my teeth down and suffered acid erosion and on top of that I hadn't looked after my teeth as I should so 6 months ago I decided I needed to sort them out, I'm 3/4 through the treatment veneers and crowns (currently have temporary veneers in place with the real ones going in over the next 2 two weeks, it's not cheap but the results are transformational and don't have to look like uniform Turkey teeth, this is being done a UK private dentist I've always been afraid of the dentist (hence the mess I got into) but they have been amazing.

Even the temps look great I can't stop smiling.

Found it! HERE My reasons for having the work done and going abroad should articulate in the thread. If not happy to clarify.

This thread might be useful for the OP's mum considering All on 4 - HERE

I started the process to fix my teeth here in Spain 3 months ago. Mine didn’t look too bad, but I had gum disease and had lost enough bone that many of my teeth were quite loose… some were loose enough that I could have pulled them out myself. I also had permanent tooth ache and pain when I ate.

I considered Turkey, but then found a place locally… a bit more expensive, but I just felt more comfortable having somewhere close in case there were any problems after the treatment.

The place I used don’t do regular dentistry. They have 20 practises all specialising in implants and reconstructive work. They have the very latest technology, and a team of dentists who do multiple implant procedures every day.

I had 27 extractions and 12 implants… all on 6. The procedure took around 4 hours, and whilst not exactly enjoyable, was completely painless both during and after. The quality of care at all stages was spot on… dentist, nurse and receptionist all super friendly with decent English.

Fortunately I hadn’t left it too late and still had sufficient bone… so no grafts or lifts required. Total cost was €13k (£11k). I think they charge around €800 for a single implant and crown.

It would be significantly cheaper for Brits to come here, have a week or 2 holiday and have their treatment done at the same time… and the dentist in charge of their care will probably have done more implant processes in a month than a Uk dentist does in a year.

I currently have temporaries, but go for the impressions for my final teeth today. It’s been a life changing experience.
