2024 step count - what did you manage?
Discussion
Set myself a target of 17,000 steps per day and ended the year at 17,087 / 9.7miles per day. Pretty pleased with that.
Not going to try to beat it this year - I'll still walk every day whatever the weather, but there have been times where I'd rather have taken the bike out and I didn't as it wouldn't count towards my steps. 15,000 will do me for 2025 I think.

Considering I’m desk bound 9hrs a day, I averaged 4500 steps a day in 2024 but in the past 6 months I’ve averaged 6500 a day which shows how much I didn’t move in the first half. I was actually very fit up till 2 yrs ago. Planning on keeping up with the 5km walks every day now.
My wife is recovering from major health issues (accident, so zero mobility for 20 years) but now targets 10,000 a day, and does 8000 without fail.
My brother who works on a shop floor does 21000 day!

This seems as good a place as any to ask, but what's a good app to use?? I have patients who tell me they do X,000 steps in a day but I have no idea how impressed to be.
I'm not particularly interested in getting a watch but would like an idea of what a quiet/busy day registers as.
The iPhone monitors it automatically. Go into the Health app and you will have access to lots of info

I use a Huawei Band 9 to track mine. It slightly under reads but is still far more accurate than relying just on a phone which you won’t always have with you. Ten days on a charge, and it’s smaller than an Apple Watch as well as being a lot cheaper (40 quid from Argos).
I’ve averaged about 14k a day over the last year.

Downside is you need the iPhone on you all the time!
Should have said android. But it is always on me.
ETA just found the android/Google equivalent. Will see how I go.

8000, phone tracking. Not a fan of wrist-based trackers, it would tell me ive done 100+ steps before even getting out of bed. Instead I keep my phone with me. I think they are best used for trends rather than absolute comparisons.
I’ve never done it but would be interesting to do a watch vs phone comparison of the same person on the same day.

Who has time to walk 10 miles a day
I do about 10km a day. I'm a fast walker, so that can be about 100 minutes. 30 minute walk before work. 30 minute walk at lunch time then either gym or another stroll.
I'm also an, if I can walk as opposed to drive I will, if I can get the stairs as opposed the the lift, I will, kind of person.

My walks are at 10min/km like you and I’d call them quick. I once did 9min/km but really had to concentrate and push hard.I saw a training plan my wife downloaded this week (Royal Marsden hosp) stating walking at 10min/km was moderate. They had fast down as 7.5min/km!
Who the heck can walk at that speed!

My average last year was 9.5k which is my highest ever (since I’ve started tracking over the past 7 years).
How are people averaging 20000 in daily routines?
If you have a job where you spend most of your working time on your feet, it's easily doable. Plus a walk from the station to work and back. How are people averaging 20000 in daily routines?
That's last month.
