Hi all,

I'm 42 just this year and dad to a 5 year old who's in school now. I work for myself in a sedentary job (artist but figure painting so sat hunched a lot).

I've had cronhs disease since I was about 16, diagnosed at 22 and had various drugs and a resection of my large right colon about 10 years ago.

I used to do light fitness at home when I lived on my own with a weight bench and PT and I am just under 5'7". I went from 75kg down to about 64kg.

Unfortunately I had to go on medical steroids and all the weight went back on in about a month after 3 months solid work and I got very disheartened.

Currently I'm 75kg and don't eat awfully I cook a lot of our meals from scratch but it's hard to do any exercise as I'm in iron tablets and get breathless relatively easily so doing exercise is harder.

I have full access to local leisure centre gym but reluctant to go in case I make a prat of myself ormire worryingly pass out if I do too much, as once happened at an induction on a translator stair machine. Tbf I did tell the guy repeatedly I felt light headed.

Can anyone help with the kind of exercise that's can ease me into a bit mire fitness and an aim to build up more physique as an end goal.

It's hard when you feel rung out after a 15 min jog.

Try couch to 5K. it's incremental. I still need to get back into it, but it's very good. and I've got Crohn's disease too!

I'm watching this with interest - as a 42 year old with Crohn's and looking to get fitter! I was on steroids for a bit and found that they made me want to run, so i did. It was a very odd feeling. I went on to Humira injections which worked really well, but got skin cancer as a side effect. I'm 6 foot 2 and dropped down to 77kgs (from 93) when my Crohn's was flaring badly. I'm 85kg now which is probably an ideal weight. Now to get strong again!

UC here, ive always hated cardio so have kinda just avoided it but found weightlifting to be really beneficial and enjoyable.
Also its quite common not to lift high reps but rather just heavy and lower reps and you can take a while between sets to help with breathlessness.

Proper diet, ultra boring but my flare ups are very rare.

I feel stressing my body from lifting does not allow other life stresses to manifest themselves in my guts and ruin my life.
Plenty of basic weightlifting programs around. Pick one you can complete with the equipment you have available.
